I am here for Friends and Networking

About Me

My name is Tim McKinstry. I'm 31 years old, and I'm originally from Auckland New Zealand. When I was growing up, I had no problem enjoying my chosen sports interests, Skatebording and Surfing. I preferred to make my own rules. I was not alone, all of my friends were skaters and surfers, and there was always a session happening at a local park or bowl, so no one was ever stuck for something to do. My parents come from Belfast originally, and they went home after 25 years in NZ. I stayed on for a while, I had a good job and I was happy enough. Then my feet got itchy, and the next thing I knew I had sold all my stuff and booked a one way ticket to Ireland to see my folks. The only thing I didn't leave behind was my skateboard, as I figured there would be loads of places to skate..I couldn't have been more wrong. For seven years, I was content just taking my skateboard out occasionally for a laugh and goofing around on it, the fire that burns in the soul that motivates a skater to go faster, ollie higher and grind further had long since been extinguished by a complete lack of stimulation by the surroundings. There was nothing to skate. No miniramp in the corner of a public park, no ancient haggard bowl stashed away behind a shopping center... nothing. What there was however, was a die hard collection of skaters and BMX'ers that had kept the flame burning through the dark times. My first thought upon meeting some of these people was 'You are the essence of hardcore.' Skating and riding BMX, among other sports, was alive and well here, and it was flourishing in spite of the complete lack of facilities. These people were a part of the worldwide family of extreme sports athletes, and they were as dedicated to their chosen sports as any I had met on my travels, in spite of the lack of support from thier local councils that athletes in other countries enjoyed. This lack of support had to change, and so I began the journey. I intend to build a permanent indoor Skate facility in Ballymena. I'm not alone in this struggle either. Along the way I've met people and made friends that hopefully will last a life time. We're all in this together..
