From Skynyrd to Merle and Waylon , like honky tonk prophets, their words linger on thru this outlaw band Hillbilly Delux. With twin guitars screaming and hard pounding Waylon esque bass and drums, Hillbilly Delux’s sound comes to life. It is best described as hard driving rocking country, that’s colored like Hank Williams Jr., Montgomery Gentry, and Travis Tritt.
Hillbilly Delux was formed in August 2006. It features members Craig Putman on lead vocals, Mitch Clemmons on lead guitar, Terry Harvey on rhythm guitar and back up vocals, Chris Stanphill on bass, and Matt Mchargue on Drums. This Muscle Shoals, AL based band is consistently turning peoples heads with sharply written original songs combined with the best covers from the past and present. They are able to grab the crowds attention with there rocking country groove and Craig’s high-flying stage antics.
Hillbilly Delux performs for many establishments throughout the southeast, From Parkers Place in St. Joe, TN to the Legendary Legacy in Tuscaloosa, AL. Also, Sidepockets Lounge in Florence, AL and Fox Rocks in Bluefield, WV just to name a few. They also do a very special show in Leesville, LA called the Wounded Warrior Project. It is a show for all the troops who come home from Iraq. The WWP always draws several thousand people who come out to show their support for the troops as well as to see a great high energy Hillbilly Delux show.
Their special relationship with there fans causes them to make certain that everyone at every show is moved by their music and a lot of the times are made a part of the show. When asked about their fan base, singer Craig Putman responds “you know if it wasn’t for the fans there would be no Hillbilly Delux, our fans are like our friends so that’s how we treat themâ€. He also recalls one memorable story from a bar in Florence, AL, This guy comes up to me and says he is from Wisconsin and is in town visiting. The guy says I have never liked country music nor have I ever wanted to be from the south, but after hearing you guys I would love to live in the south and now I like country music if it sounds anything like Hillbilly Delux. Craig goes on to say “I thought man that’s one of the coolest things I have ever heard, that’s why I want to sing and put on the best show possible for the fansâ€.
Hillbilly Delux’s determination to be seen and heard is evident in the fact that they have preformed over 110 shows in eight months, while every member of the band holds down a steady day job. They have been referred to as road hammers by there peers, as well as newspapers and certain radio stations. The band is also achieving great success with their myspace website. To date they have over 125,000 demo plays and over 78,000 views, the site averages 500-600 demo plays per day. They were the 1 unsigned band from Alabama on myspace, until local Alabama singer Zack Hacker appeared on USA Networks Nashville Star and received national exposure. Since then they have remained a solid 2. Nationally, they have consistently stayed between numbers 25-30 in the top 100 unsigned bands.
The band has been experiencing great success in the merchandise aspect of things as well. One particular example is with the first batch of Hillbilly Delux tee shirts. They were taken out to a show in which all 75 shirts were sold in 45 minutes. This once again proves the high demand for Hillbilly Delux. Since Hillbilly Delux has done radio and newspaper interviews, its obvious they are on a mission to make sure as many people as possible get to hear them and that they get the opportunity to have a positive effect on someone’s life or if at least only for a couple of hours.
In closing, Hillbilly Delux has had its share of rough and rowdy behavior. They often like to quote a Waylon Jennings song “ Don’t you think this outlaw bits done got outta handâ€. Great songs always come out of great road stories, along with new friends in great cities. With many shows on the horizon, countless miles to be driven, songs to be written, and albums to be recorded, Hillbilly Delux will bring their “dirty country†sound and high energy performances to the world of music and fans nationwide.
