PLAYBOY.com review 3 1/2 bunnies out of 4
The best thing about Serious Times, a diverse mix of modern dancehall beats, is how it revels in reggae clichés without becoming a series of dreadlocked, pot-smoking stereotypes. Weed still figures heavily into the lyrical content -- two tracks named "Marijuana" are followed by three different tracks named "Rolling." But during these five songs, the listener is taken on a journey from Jamaica to New York. A dark, smoked-out jam that samples a rooster's crow turns into sunny serenades about puffing up and finally morphs into a series of gruff vocals about rolling through Flatbush as police sirens blare. New Yorker Max Glazer, a member of the Federation Sound crew and current tour DJ for Barbados-born R&B singer Rihanna, put together Serious Times with a live party feel in mind. By peppering the album with crowd samples and dubplate remixes that stretch out tracks and repeat themes, he recreates a club atmosphere. After an intense start highlighted by Turbulence's slow-burning anthem "Notorious," Glazer adopts a more tranquil mood, chilling out with songs like Nitty Kutchie's bittersweet acoustic cover on Akon's "Ghetto" and the title track by soothing vocalist Gyptian. The mellow vibe kicks in, but the buzz never fades.
