About Me

My Testimony:I am a born again believer, The redemptive power of Jesus Christ is just as strong today as it was 2000 years ago. I once was bound by sin but now I have been set free. The bible says we are all born into sin but by the blood of the lamb we are redeemed, bought with a price. I live to tell the story of how He saved me and how He is raising me to a higher place. I was a delivered from the bondage of drug dealing/using and alcohol addition. Because of circumstance, like many of our African Americans I felt left out, not wanted and down trodden. I was raised to be proud of my heritage under the tutelage of my mother, the late Yvonne Brittain-Whitlow. She taught us that being black were an honor not a curse as so many in this country have tried to make us think. However there was something missing, knowing that I was supposed to be proud of whom I was but there was still a piece missing. After years of running from what I was taught at Prayer Tower COGIC by my grandfather the Late Pastor and Supt. Robert L. Dorris and other churches. I had lived a hard life. Didn't have to but that was the choices I made. I still wanted to do things my way. I have been shot and put myself in several situations that could have cost me my life. God spared my life at least 5 times that I can give a detailed account of and several more than I have been told about from others. He allowed me to regain a sense of purpose and I started working in the community and joined the Joliet NAACP in 1998. 2 years later God allowed me to be elected as president; I served for 2 and half terms. I stepped down only to go into the ministry which was required for my life. Now as walking in His will is the Gift of Ministry and now an aspiring singer who loves to sing praises to the King of Glory. A member of the Prayer Tower Mass Choir as well as the Men's Praise team and Combined Praise Team.My Bio: Raised, on the north side of Joliet, in one poorest communities, called the hill. Kevin has seen many things in his urban upbringing. He and his family survived the onslaught poverty of living in what is called the “Projects”. After living there for over ten years he and his family moved to another poor section of town called the south end, which he lived until adulthood. While living in these adverse conditions he saw, unemployment, harassment, Drug addition as well high crime. Despite all the negative things that we’re present in His community there was also bright spots or rays of light. His mother always kept him and his brother involved with her community programs working in both the Joliet and Lockport areas. So he grew up in a very cultured environment. There he learned of predecessors before him as well modern day activists. Little did he know GOD was setting him up For a leadership role in his future. During his early adulthood to much of the present, he was always an advocate for civil rights for all that are considered American. Being a minority he has had first hand knowledge of being considered second class by others. Kevin Dorris has turned tragedy to triumph by putting his energy into helping others. “Just trying to help is his motto”. Kevin Dorris has the vision that can change the way our communities are. By showing the people who he grew up with and been around that you can change for the better and with determination anything is possible. In order to be an effective leader you must have common ground with the people. He has given his life to GOD and by doing that, divine favor has been bestowed upon him. He quotes “with GOD in control all things are possible. He has spent a lot of time building bridges trying to bring the Joliet community together. East and West, North and South. Kevin attended Joliet East High school, Joliet Junior College and I.T.T. Technical Institute. He is currently employed at Rogina & Associates Civil Engineering Firm, where he is a computer aided drafting technician. Besides serving as the president and board member of the Joliet NAACP, and he has served as ascme union steward for Will County. Currently serves on the Prayer Tower Church of God in Christ as a ordained Elder as Men's department chairmen and Pastoral Adjunctant for Pastor Warren C. Dorris Jr. as well as several other auxiliaries at the church, An Joliet Exchange Club Board member, Policeman and Fireman of the Year committeeman, Rainbow Push annual program committeeman and a board member of the Spanish Community Center formerly known as the Spanish Center), a mentor at Morningstar Missons Alcohol and drug prevention program as well as a Public Motivational Speaker. Kevin has a Lovely wife and three beautiful children and one grandson. As long as the public will have him he will serve, and by serving others we serve GOD.
