The Laredo Center for the Arts invites the community to its Friday Happening on Friday, June 6, 2008 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. The evening will feature an Artist Reception, and a deejay set by the Pop Rocks.The Lilia G. Martinez Gallery proudly presents “Triple Time†installations by Chip Dunahugh. Chip Dunahugh’s body of work focuses on installations, paintings, and collage. Dunahugh’s work reminiscent of cubism and Matisse is comprised of panel groupings used as installation. The panels are designed to lean against a wall and function similarly to an abstract painting as well as to be elements of an installation. The painted cut panel pieces provide an opportunity to investigate multiple variations of the relationships of shape, color, gesture, and edge in different combinations more easily than in a painting. The exhibit will be on display from June 3 – June 31, 2008.On display in the LACF Community Gallery will be Pincel, taller de arte infantile. All the artwork on display was created by children ages 5 – 11 and explore mixed genres such as landscapes, portraits, still life’s, animals, and religious iconography.On display in the Laredo Art League Gallery will be photographs by Mary Bausman. Her photographs titled, “Classic Forms†is a celebration of simple lines, supple shapes and dramatic light. Her photographs illustrate the simplicity of the human form in classical presentation. Mary Bausman received both her MFA and BFA from Texas Tech University and currently serves as an adjunct instructor of Art at Laredo Community College.The Goodman Gallery presents “History “, by Jenny E. Balisle. Her art is inspired by patterns in nature and Asian calligraphy. The multiple layers in her paintings become intricate surfaces that reflect and glow with iridescence while maintaining a minimalist composition. The exhibit will be on display from May 2 to June 26, 2008.In addition to the visual arts, the event will incorporate a deejay set by The Pop Rocks. The Pop Rocks are a local deejay duo that combine art and music in a masterful way.This event is free and open to the public. The Laredo Center for the Arts invites the community to its Friday Happening on Friday, May 9, 2008 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. The evening will feature an Artist Reception, an Artist talk with Tom Richard and Jenny Balisle, and a live deejay set by the Pop Rocks.The Lilia G. Martinez Gallery proudly presents Tom Richard “Playing: Toys and Stuffâ€. The exhibition will consist of vivid mixed media pieces from two artist series, “Playing, Watching, Reading, Painting†and “Toys and Stuff.†Art Pieces from the “Toys and Stuff†series depict images of the artists’ childhood toys juxtaposed with “stuff.†His work in mixed media involves images from pop culture juxtaposed with quotes from theoretical and pop culture sources. His comical, colorful, and philosophical work makes reference to “low†art sources, using the quality of line and form found in animation and comic books.Tom Richard is an Associate Professor of Art at the University of Arkansas in Monticello. He received a Master of Fine Arts degree in painting and drawing from the State University of New York at Albany, and a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Louisiana State University. He has exhibited his work at a number of locations, including solo and group exhibitions in New York City, San Francisco, New Orleans, Chicago, and Hot Springs, Arkansas. The exhibit will be on display from May 2 to June 26, 2008. Tom Richard will conduct an Artist talk at 7 p.m. during the Artist’s reception.The Goodman Gallery presents “History “ by Jenny E. Balisle’s oil paintings, pool, wrinkle, scrape and create chemical reactions with solvents that mimic occurrences in the natural world. Her art is an observation of the environment close and far away.Jenny Balisle has exhibited in numerous solo and group shows in Chicago, Los Angeles, and Cambridge, Massachusetts. She earned a B.A. in Art and Communication from the University of Wisconsin and a M.F.A. from the Academy of Art College in San Francisco. The exhibit will be on display from May 2 to June 26, 2008. Martinez Gallery proudly presents the 3rd Biennial Salsa Student Art Show. Salsa was open to all college students enrolled between Spring 2007 and Spring 2008. The exhibit will feature over 50 pieces exploring different types of media such as ceramics, drawing, mixed media, painting, photography, printmaking, and sculpture. One cash prize of $250 will be awarded to the Best of Show as well as 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place prizes in 2D and 3D. Julio Mendez juried the collegiate exhibition. Mr. Mendez received his BA in Art Education from University of Texas in El Paso and his MS in School Administration from Texas A & M International University. He currently serves as the Director of Fine Arts for the Laredo Independent School District.The LACF Community Gallery presents the 12th Annual Photography Exhibit by Vidal M. Trevino’s School of Communication and Fine Arts Journalism students. Forty-three students ranging from ninth thru twelfth grade, as well as their instructor, Mark Webber, and two guest artists will be exhibiting both black-and-white film and color digital photographs. All participating students are on the staff of the state and nationally recognized Magnet Tribune newspaper. The photography exhibit will be on display from April 5 to April 30, 2008.On exhibit, in the Laredo Art League Gallery, will be thirty-two, black-and-white, sepia, and selenium toned silver print photographs by photographer Penny Warren. The photographs on display explore mixed genres such as landscapes, still life, flora and fauna. The photography exhibit will be on display from April 1 to April 30, 2008.On display, in the Goodman Gallery will be “Angels and Insectsâ€, fine art photography by B.A. Bosaiya. The photographs are intended to mirror into the viewer’s unconscious mind and force the viewer to examine their interior lives and the secrets within themselves. The subjects and images used in the photographs are used in hopes of restoring some sense of wonder about the world around us. The photography exhibit will be on display from March 4 to April 26, 2008.

Martinez Foundation. Each year, the Laredo Center for the Arts hosts one, nine-month internship for a college graduate and two, three-month internships for upper-level college students with a vast interest in art. The goal of the internship is to provide college students and graduates, who wish to pursue a career in the arts, the opportunity to learn and work in a dynamic museum setting. Interns will gain significant experiences in one or more areas of specialization including working with outreach educational programs and temporary exhibitions.Applicants interested must: fill out an application form, submit a resume, college transcripts, 1 letter of recommendation and a letter of interest with a focus statement. This internship is targeted at college students with at least 60 credit hours and are pursuing a degree in Art, Studio Art, Art History or a related field. There are two positions available. Application deadline is April 29, 2008. Applications may be picked up at LCA. This full time position is to be filled by May 15, 2008 and its duties will extend thru August 15, 2008. Interns will receive a $ 2,700 stipend.Ideal applicants for this upper-level college internship should possess the ability to work well with people of all ages and communicate effectively; be able to manage several projects simultaneously; and possess computer skills including Microsoft Office, Publisher and Adobe Photoshop.The Laredo Center for the Arts, located at 500 San Agustin Ave. in the old Mercado, coordinates, promotes, encourages and supports the arts in the Laredo and South Texas area. The 3rd Biennale Salsa Student Art Show will be held on April 11, 2007. The Salsa Student Art Show supports local collegiate students by giving them an opportunity to exhibit in a dynamic and professional environment.The Salsa Student Art Show is open to all college students enrolled between Spring 2007 and Spring 2008. Only original artwork completed in the last year and not previously shown at LCA may be submitted. The following media categories will be accepted: ceramics, digital media, film and video, drawing (includes pastel and ink), mixed media, painting, photography, jewelry, printmaking, sculpture, and installation.Students are allowed to submit no more than three pieces at a non-refundable entry fee of $25 (work can be no larger than 4ft. x 4ft.). The Salsa entry fee includes a one-year student level membership to the Laredo Center for the Arts.All artwork must be ready to hang. Screw eyes and wire must be attached. Gallery stretched canvas will be accepted. LCA reserves the right to reject artwork.Students participating will have a chance to compete for cash and merchandise awards. One $250 cash prize will be awarded by LCA to the Best of Show. Accepted entries will also be eligible for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place prizes in 2D, 3D, and Media Art categories.Entries must be submitted on Friday, March 28 and Saturday, March 29 between 10 am – 5 pm at the Laredo Center for the Arts. All artists will be notified if their piece was selected by phone or email on Thursday, April 3, 2008. All artwork not selected for the show must be picked up no later than Friday, April 4, 2008.Entry forms may be picked up at the Laredo Center for the Arts, Laredo Community College Art Department and the Texas A & M International Art Department.
