Highway patrol is investigating a two-car collision that killed four teenagers and a Hilton Head Island couple Saturday evening near Levy. A 2003 Dodge pickup was traveling on S.C. 170-A toward Levy after leaving a skating rink in greater Bluffton when it collided with a 1998 Honda Accord carrying the island couple and two teenagers returning from a wedding reception in Savannah, emergency officials said Sunday. All occupants of the Honda and two Bluffton teenagers in the pickup were killed. The incident occurred at about 10:30 p.m. after Raymond Kelly Jr., 20, of Hardeeville lost control of the pickup he was driving, said Lance Cpl. Paul Brouthers, spokesman for the S.C. Highway Patrol. The truck, which was traveling on a road slick with rain at a speed too fast for conditions, started sliding when the driver was navigating a curve, Brouthers said. The truck skidded sideways across the center line on the two-lane road, crossed into the other lane and collided with the oncoming Honda, driven by Shakeria Thomas,22, of Hilton Head. After the impact of the collision, both vehicles exploded, Jasper County Coroner Martin Sauls said. The cause remains under investigation, Brouthers said. All four people in the Honda were killed: Thomas; Thomas husband, Jamal, 25; and passengers Terrell Pinckney,15, and Rhonda Webber,15, both of Ridgeland. They were in the vehicle when it was destroyed by fire, Brouthers said. He said two passengers in the Dodge were pronounced dead at the scene: Brooke Ockovcin,15, and Lauren Kerry,15, both of Bluffton. Kelly the driver of the Dodge, was taken to Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah, Brouthers said No information on Kelly’s condition was available Sunday evening. A fourth passenger officials could not identify is believed to have checked into Coastal Carolina Medical Center in Hardeeville on his own for treatment for minor burns, Brouthers said. The Highway Patrol’s Multidisciplinary Accident Investigation Team helped reconstruct the accident Saturday for investigative purposes, Brouthers said. No charges have been filed. The speed limit on the stretch of S.C. 170-A where the crash occurred is 55 mph, said Lt. Mike Lassiter of the Levy Fire Department. The speed of the truck is unknown because the incident is still under investigation, Brouthers said. No autopsies will be performed, Sauls Funeral Home in Bluffton is in charge of arrangements for Ockovcin and Kerry.We RememberAs grieving students and family members entered Bluffton High School’s auditorium for a memorial service Tuesday, photographs of three teenagers who died in a two-car collision Saturday in Jasper County flashed on a screen. There was a picture of Bluffton High ninth-grader Lauren Carey, 15, huddle on the beach with friends and family members. Another image showed her smiling for the camera in cheerleading grab. Terrill Pinckney,14,an eight-grader at H.E. McCracken Middle School who was on the high school track team, stood proudly in his uniform. And 10th-grader Brooke Ockovcin,15, smiled in a white formal dress next to two girlfriends. A Jasper County High School ninth-grader, Rhonda Webber, and Bluffton couple Shakeria Miley-Thomas,22, and Jamal Thomas,25, also died in the wreck. Aretha Rhone-Bush, Bluffton High’s principal, welcomed to the service students and some family members of the teens who died. She said the service, which began at 1:00p.m. and was repeated at 1:45p.m. so all students could attend, was organized by students. “The organizers even told me what I was to do in the program. That’s why it’s so special,†Rhone-Bush said. Behind her on the stage sat three potted, flowering trees that will be planted on the school’s grounds to remember the three Bluffton students who died last weekend. At least eight students at the service read original poetry, most of it expressing loss and shock at how abruptly their friends lives ended. “ One moment they were hear, the next they were gone,†Jessica Grandison read. But when another student, Tea Green, sang “ His eye is on the sparrow, “ it was emotionally too much for some of Terrill’s family members, who left the auditorium in tears. Cpl. Thomas Loving, the school’s resource officer, tried to soothe the many students who were crying and distress. “ I only hope when god calls me home, “ he said. “ I’ve made a difference to as many individuals as are hear today. “ And it was loving, along with Bluffton High Parent Vernon Frazier, who helped Tavaras Pinckney, Terrill’s twin brother off stage at the end of the program, when Tavaras could no longer read through his tears. As the program closed, Rhone-Bush told the three student’s parents that they could lean on the school’s staff and students. “ you still have extended family here at Bluffton High School, “ she said Students also were welcome to add to the memorial bulletin board in the school’s cafeteria. On Tuesday afternoon, the board was filled with notes, poems and photographs. Around the board were flowers, balloons and stuffed animals left to honor the classmates killed Saturday.
