Well...what can I say? While in high school, none of the Christians would have anything to do with me because of my bad language. They all agreed not to witness to me, convinced that I was the last guy on earth who would ever accept Jesus Christ. After graduation from High School, I won a scholarship to the Pasadena Playhouse to study acting, but my studies were interrupted by the military. I spent the next three years in the Army, which took me to foreign countries like New Guinea, Australia, the Philippines and Japan. After being discharged from the service, I returned to the Playhouse, where I met and married my beautiful wife, Lynn, who was instrumental in my salvation. While visiting Lynns parents in Canada on their honeymoon, my mother-in-law insisted that I sit and listen to Charles E. Fullers Old Fashioned Revival Hour radio program. God was already working on my heart, but when Fuller said the words, "Though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow," I fell on my knees and my life was changed forever."Once married, I used my artistic talents to earn a living. I had always longed to be a professional cartoonist, but now as a Christian, I also desire to use my art talents for the Lord. While working at Astro Science Corporation in El Monte, California, I was sitting in my car reading a copy of Power From On High by Charles Finney, which an old welder had given me. I remember that book pushed my button. I went to church and saw all the deadness and hypocrisy, and I thought, thats why there is no revival. So I started making these little sketches. My burden was to wake Christians up to pray for revival."I couldnt find a publisher who was willing to print my book, so I borrowed $800 from the credit union and paid for the first printing of "Why No Revival?"I was invited to present the Gospel to a group of inmates at a prison near my home. I drew several pieces of cartoon art and prepared a flip chart to illustrate what I was saying. At the conclusion of my message, nine of the eleven inmates present trusted Jesus Christ as their personal Lord and Savior.
I became convinced that God has given me a method of reaching people with the Gospel that works. That art was later put into booklet form and became the tract "This Was Your Life" !Using my kitchen table as an office and art studio, I continued writing new tracts, as God gave them to me. Throughout the rough early years, I persevered as many bookstores were reluctant to accept my revolutionary concepts and my special love for saving Catholics with the real Gospel of Jesus Christ. I recall we were having a tough time out there.
A lot of the bookstores were really outraged at 'some guy' using these cartoons to present the Gospel. It was not sacred and they thought it was sacrilegious! For nearly forty years, my work has flourished. I have written and published hundreds of illustrated Gospel tracts in over 100 different languages. Copies of my tracts were even requested by the Smithsonian Institute for the display on American culture. Hundreds of millions of copies have been read world-wide.My burden has always been to pour the Gospel into the hands of millions of lost people around the world. I always wanted to be a missionary myself and now I am because my tracts march out all over the world!I stay home now making effective gospel literature that missionaries can use to win the lost. They love my tract booklets and use them to reach multitudes they could never reach one on one.And now I labor without the love and support of my wonderful wife, Lynn.On February 10, 1998, Lynn, my love of 50 years, went home to be with the Lord. I will see her again very soon.Jack T. Chick
