Kystars 2006 Grand Final
Kystars 2006 ‘Battle of the Bands
8pm, Saturday, August 19
Kiama High School Auditorium
’ KYSTARS 2006 is turning into something of a “battle of the bands” with five bands making it through to the grand final to be held on August 19. Altogether three dance acts and six vocal numbers as well as the bands will contest the $2300 in prize money on offer at this year’s Kiama Lions-IMB Kystars Talent Showcase. Two heats were held last Saturday at Kiama Leagues Club with almost 60 participants vying for a place in the grand final. Those to win through were: Dancers – Ashleigh Ryan, 16, from Kanahooka; duo Shelby Lacey, 14, and Natasha Remfry, 16, from Oak Flats; and Kayla Magrin, 14, from Albion Park. Vocalists – Luke Ryan, 18, from Kanahooka; Penny Evans, 19, of Albion Park; Lia Iafolla, 14, from Horsley; duet Sarah Van Essen, 15, and Blake Kalkowski, 15, from St Georges Basin; Christina Paterno, 16, from Kiama Downs; and Christian D’Amico, 15, from Jamberoo. Bands – The Green Room from Huskisson, Triggermoose from Bowral, The Soft Ribbons from Cambewarra and Inappropriate from Jamberoo. Instant Sanity, a band from Berry, will go into the final as the Producer’s Pick. The Kystars 2006 Grand Final will be held at the Kiama High School Hall from 8pm on Saturday, August 19. Prizes of $250 for each category are stake with $100 for the runners-up. On top of this is a $750 prize for the act judged the Kystars of 2006. There will also be a $250 overall runner-up prize plus a further $250 People’s Choice Prize. Tickets for the show can be booked at the Kiama Visitors Centre on 1300 654 262 or purchased at the door. Kystars Executive Producer Graeme Henderson said it was exciting to see the increased level of interest from up and coming young bands in Kystars. “The fact that we had Three Stripe Avenue, a band from Ulladulla, win last year’s Kystars has no doubt helped put us on the map as far as the bands are concerned,” Mr Henderson said. “Overall there has been a big lift in the quality of the performances and we are expecting a great show with all round entertainment on Grand Final night.” Kystars was initiated three years ago by Kiama Lions Club to give local young pop artists a chance to perform in a quality production before a live audience. “Each of the vocalists gets to sing with a professional five-piece band which really lifts their performance and adds to their confidence,” Mr Henderson said. “It is really all about giving these young artists a great time in a friendly atmosphere and perhaps a boost to the ambitions to be part of show business in one way or another.” Kystars has the generous support of IMB Banking & Financial Services plus backing from Kiama Municipal Council, Kiama Leagues Club and WestonPrint.
