About Me

Maynard James Keenan

Keenan was born to a Baptist family in Ravenna, Ohio , on April 17 , 1964 . He joined the Army in 1982. By that time he had lived in Ohio, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Oklahoma, Kansas and Texas. He studied at West Point Academy prepschool from 1983 to 1984; however, he eventually left the military to study art at Kendall College of Art and Design in Grand Rapids, Michigan , which eventually landed him a job in Los Angeles "applying spatial design concepts" to pet stores. Before his years with Tool, Keenan sang for Green Jellÿ and Children of the Anachronistic Dynasty , and played bass guitar for TexAns .

In the 1980s Keenan moved to Los Angeles , apparently to work in interior design. He formed Tool with guitarist Adam Jones and bassist Paul d'Amour (later replaced by Justin Chancellor ). The lineup was not completed until Keenan's neighbor drummer Danny Carey agreed to join.

They released the Opiate EP in 1992 and toured with the bands Fishbone and Rage Against the Machine . Shortly thereafter, the U.S. saw the release of Tool's 1993 debut album, Undertow , which eventually launched the band into success. Keenan's lyrics and vocals were melodic, grim, and angst-ridden. However, as Keenan continued to record with Tool, his lyrics evolved into increasingly introspective and spiritual works that focused not only on anger but on the positive benefits of transcending it. Henry Rollins , singer for Black Flag and Rollins Band, appeared on Undertow .

.. Keenan's photo in a U. S. Military Academy Preparatory School yearbook

Keenan has repeatedly used his voice to advance issues which are of special interest to him, among them being an appearance at a benefit concert for Tori Amos ' RAINN (the Rape, Abuse, Incest National Network) on 1997 - 01-23 at the Madison Square Garden in New York City .

So this is one of my dearest friends. This is Maynard from Tool, and uh, I call him up when I'm feeling terrible and he sings me lullabies. So I asked him to come and sing tonight. ( Tori Amos , introducing Keenan to the audience at the RAINN benefit concert)

After the release of Ænima the band would find themselves in a prolonged legal battle with their label Volcano Records (formerly Zoo Records). Following this legal battle, which resulted in a new three record deal, the members of Tool decided to take some time off. During this period, Keenan found time to work with Billy Howerdel (a guitar tech known to the band) on a different project. The band they formed, A Perfect Circle , began performing in 1999 and released its first album Mer de Noms in 2000. They eventually released a successful follow-up, Thirteenth Step in 2003. In 2004 they released an album comprised mostly of covers titled eMOTIVe .

In February, 2005, Keenan appeared as a surprise vocalist at a Seattle benefit concert for victims of the recent tsunami in southern Asia , performing with the partly reformed Alice in Chains in place of the deceased vocalist Layne Staley on the songs "Them Bones", and "Man in the Box."

Keenan is unmarried and has one son named Devo (born August 5 , 1995 ). He was engaged to Jennifer Ferguson , but they broke up before marrying. The song "Breña," by A Perfect Circle , uses her middle name, while another song bears the name of Keenan's mother, Judith . His mother is also the inspiration for the two-part song "Wings for Marie" on 10,000 Days .

Keenan's newest project is winemaking. He owns Merkin Vineyards and Caduceus Cellars, based in the unincorporated area of Page Springs/Cornville, Arizona, southwest of Sedona.

In 2003, Keenan surfaced under the moniker " Puscifer " on the soundtrack for the movie Underworld . Puscifer is a cover name for non-Tool related work with Danny Lohner, former member of Nine Inch Nails. They contributed the song "REV 22:20". In 2006, Puscifer contributed a song to the Underworld sequel, Underworld: Evolution . This track is called "The Undertaker (Renholder Mix)". That same year Keenan explained in an interview conducted by French magazine "Rock Hard", that his band A Perfect Circle is not only on hiatus due to the release of Tool's fourth full-length studio album, but finished.

']['(())(())][_ is an American rock band, formed in 1990 in Los Angeles , California , when drummer Danny Carey joined the rehearsal of his neighbor, singer Maynard James Keenan , guitarist Adam Jones and bassist Paul d'Amour , when nobody else would show up. His decision proved to be a stroke of luck when the band turned out to become a highly successful act, "introducing dark, vaguely underground metal to the preening pretentiousness of art rock" [1] — most notably due to their influential third album, Ænima ( 1996 ). They have gained appreciation and critical praise for a complex and ever-evolving sound, that ranges from "slam and bang" heavy metal on their first release [2] to more progressive influenced songwriting on Lateralus (2001) which "in another era [...] would have been considered progressive rock , ten tons of impressive pretension."
Their overall sound has been described as "grinding, post- Jane's Addiction heavy metal" [4] as well as "a primal sound as distinct as it is disturbing" [5] — most simplified categorizations of the band's genre are often dismissed (see: Arguments About Genre & Categorization ). They are known for addressing philosophical and spiritual issues in their lyrics, such as evolution and Jungian psychology (" Forty Six & 2 "), organized religion ("Opiate") and transcendence ("Lateralus"), as well as for songs that feature "complex rhythm changes, haunting vocals, and an onslaught of changes in dynamics" [6] which often result in a greater-than-average track length. Additionally, most of their music videos feature stop-motion animation created by Jones, in a style similar to the Brothers Quay — "strange puzzle-like four minute movies" — which tend to perpetuate the perception of Tool as a "dark, disturbing" band. [7]

Their music has been influenced by King Crimson [8] , Led Zeppelin [9] , Pink Floyd [10] , Rush , Meshuggah , and early Yes , among several others. In turn, Tool's music has been deemed influential by critics and fellow artists alike.

Formed by Tool vocalist Maynard James Keenan and former Tool guitar tech Billy Howerdel, A Perfect Circle is an extension of the alt-metal fused with art rock style popularized by Tool in the early to mid-'90s. While similar to Tool in intensity and melancholy, A Perfect Circle is less dark and more melodic with a theatrical, ambient quality that incorporates occasional strings and unusual instrumentation.

After the release of Aenima in 1996, Tool found themselves in the midst of an extended legal battle with former label Freeworld Entertainment. When the dust settled two years later, the band reached a 50/50 joint venture agreement for future recordings and, feeling a little burned out, decided to take some time off. It was at this point that Keenan joined up with Howerdel and Paz Lenchantin to form A Perfect Circle. Keenan had met Howerdel in 1992 when Tool opened for Fishbone. Howerdel had been Fishbone's tech at the time and had played Keenan a few of his songs. Keenan was impressed and the two talked of collaborating in the future. However, the opportunity didn't present itself until after the Freeworld settlement. With Keenan on vocals, Howerdel on guitar, and Lenchantin on bass, the trio recruited ex-Failure and Enemy member Troy Van Leeuwen on guitar and ex-Vandals and Guns N' Roses member Josh Freese on drums.
The quintet rehearsed together but didn't announce the formation of a new band until performing for the first time on August 15, 1999, at a benefit concert at the Viper Room in Los Angeles. Howerdel, who had been composing songs for years, as well as working with bands such as the Smashing Pumpkins and Nine Inch Nails, became the band's chief songwriter and producer. A Perfect Circle released their debut album, Mer de Noms, in 2000. Thirteenth Step followed in 2003, and the covers album Emotive appeared in 2004.

Maynard James Keenan is producing wine. After already successfully navigating the music business as lead singer for Tool and APerfectCircle , his new venture, Caduceus , is an extension of a love he found for wine. I remember a few years ago reading an article in Wine Spectator about how he had found this profound love after trying a 1992 Silver Oak, and subsequently amassed an impressive collection of wine from around the world. Later, it was revealed that his great Grandparents and Great Uncle made wine in what was Northern Italy (now Southern France), and the stage was set for him to embark on his own winemaking project.

His canvas is the Verde Valley in Northern Arizona in the form of Merkin Vineyards. His vineyard site is composed of four different blocks with unique soil characteristics that vary from chalky sedimentary rock, to fine river sediment with calcareous substrate “peppered with evidence of volcanic intrusions”. Maynard also choose to employ the talent of Eric Glomsky as winemaker for the project, who was formerly co-winemaker at David Bruce Vineyards in California. The wine at Caduceus is produced from some 6000 vines, some of which were recently planted and are still unusable. In the meantime they have chosen to blend some local fruit with grapes grown in California from areas like Paso Robles, and the Pope Valley in Napa Valley.

is the name of a side project of Danny Lohner (Nine Inch Nails) and Maynard James Keenan (Tool/A Perfect Circle). Only two songs have been released to date: "REV 22:20" and "The Undertaker (Renholdër Mix)", which feature on the soundtracks to Underworld and Underworld: Evolution respectively. A remix of "REV 22:20" was featured on the soundtrack to Saw II entitled "REV 22:20 (REV 4:20 Mix)", remixed by Charlie Clouser.A message on Puscifer.com says that the site will go live October 13, 2006.On the project's MySpace page Maynard James Keenan gives the following description of Puscifer:
"My name is Maynard James Keenan.

Welcome to Puscifer, my creative subconscious. Welcome to the party that goes on in my head 24 hours a day. Welcome to my island of misfit ideas who've found no home with TOOL, A PERFECT CIRCLE, or CADUCEUS. Here's the skinny... I'm a Workaholic with a Napoleon Complex, a Wine Lover, a Musician, and all around Paranoid Conspiracy Theorist. So it should come as no surprise that all of these elements would continually try to seep out into some form of catch all "inside" project. And Puscifer is that project. The space where my Id, Ego, and Anima all come together to exchange cookie recipes. This is a space without any hard edges. It's a space with no clear or discernable goals. Check your over inflated expectations at the door. Cuz this is simply a playground for the various voices in my head. Come play with us."

Etymology
The band has circulated several stories surrounding the origin of their name. One of the most vital speculations revolved around lachrymology, a pseudophilosophy that the band has stated was founded in 1949 by Ronald P. Vincent after the death of his wife in a snow plowing accident. Drummer Danny Carey alleged that the name "Tool" means that the band served its fans as a tool through which those people would come to understand the concept of lachrymology. However, it is more likely that the band made this up in order to create a unique backdrop for their own beliefs.Singer Maynard James Keenan gave a more direct approach to explaining his band's name in an interview in 1994:
Tool is exactly what it sounds like: It's a big dick. It's a wrench. It's also what it sounds like: It's a verb, it's a digging factor. It's an active process of searching, as in use us, we are a shovel, we are the match, we're the blotter of acid, your tool; use us as a catalyst in your process of finding out whatever it is you need to find out, or whatever it is you're trying to achieve.

Movies:

10,000 Days is Tool 's fourth full-length studio album. It was released on April 28 , 2006 , in parts of Europe and April 29 in Australia , May 1 in the United Kingdom, and May 2 in North America.

Following a five-year gap after their previous album, Lateralus , Tool's newest release was subject to much speculation and rumor, just as its predecessor had been. Rumors surrounding the band's activity reached a point where it was speculated that they had fabricated a "decoy" album, creating an elaborate hoax to fool audiences until the day of release. [1] These rumors began to subside when a leaked copy of the album was illegally distributed via filesharing networks on or around April 18 , 2006 . 10,000 Days elaborates upon the sound of Tool's earlier records, while stylistically acknowledging the musical influence of the band's tourmates Fantômas and Meshuggah . [2] The album received generally favorable reviews by critics.

On March 27 , Billboard posted an article about 10,000 Days, [3] which mentioned that " Vicarious " would be the album's first single. "Vicarious" was officially released to radio on April 17 , and entered the U.S. Modern Rock Tracks chart at #2. A music video for the song was tentatively scheduled to premiere in early July 2006. [4]

The second single from the album is " The Pot ".

The album was recorded at O'Henry Studios in Burbank, California as well as at The Loft and Grandmaster Studios in Hollywood , California. It was mixed at Bay 7 in North Hollywood and mastered at Gateway Mastering Studios in Portland, Maine . The May 2006 issue of Guitar World (released April 11 ) featured an interview with guitarist Adam Jones discussing the new album. Jones explained that recording techniques for the album involved the use of a "pipe bomb microphone" (a guitar pickup mounted inside a brass cylinder), and a talk box guitar solo on the song "Jambi." Drummer Danny Carey triggered many of the sound effects on the album using electronic drums called Mandalas .

The CD packaging for 10,000 Days consists of a thick cardboard-bound booklet partly covered by a flap holding a pair of stereoscopic eyeglasses, which can be used to view a series of images inside (including, for the first time since Undertow , an individual portrait of each band member). The glasses give the artwork an illusion of depth and three-dimensionality. Alex Grey , who created a majority of the album art for Lateralus and its accompanying video "Parabola", reprised his role for 10,000 Days. The artwork's 3D modelling is credited to Ray Zone while the illustration and CGI concepts are credited to Grey (including several adaptations of his painting "Net of Being"). The CD face itself is decorated with stylized eyes, arranged in a seemingly logarithmic spiral towards the center (adapted from a previous Alex Grey painting, "Collective Vision"). As with Tool's other albums, the lyrics are not printed within the artwork; vocalist Maynard James Keenan has instead released lyrics for previous Tool albums .. following their respective releases. However, it is unknown if this trend will continue. As of October 2006, only the official lyrics of "Rosetta Stoned" and "The Pot" have been released.

In a May 5 post on the band's official website [5] , it is hinted that "the four individual photos [of the band members] can be used as the pieces of a kind of puzzle", but the puzzle and its meaning "will just be another nut to crack."

Vicarious means either "experienced or gained through someone else" or "done on behalf of others". (See Vicarious ). "Marie" is the middle name of Keenan's deceased mother, Judith Marie Garrison . As Keenan explains in his commentary on A Perfect Circle's aMOTION DVD, Judith suffered a stroke that left her partially paralyzed and wheelchair -bound. The two-part song, "Wings for Marie", is an opus dedicated to her. The length of time between the paralysis and her death was 27 years, or approximately 10,000 days. The band debuted Wings for Marie (Pt 1) and 10,000 Days (Wings Pt 2), on September 7 2006 , before a live audience at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, CA. [10] In the Guitar World interview, Jones confirmed that the title of "The Pot" was a reference to an idiomatic term for hypocrisy (i.e., the " pot calling the kettle black "). The Lipan are an Apache tribe, also known as the "Tall Grass People". An April 7 post on the official Tool website specifically mentioned Dr. Albert Hofmann (the "father" of LSD ) and stated that he first synthesized LSD on that date. The Rosetta Stone is an archeological artifact of carved granite found in Egypt. The tablet was used as a key to decipher Egyptian hieroglyphs; its name was also used as a nom de plume for children's author Dr. Seuss . It is also a quick second language learning system. "Viginti Tres" is Latin for "twenty-three" - the number has a lot of historical , mathematical , and occult significance. For more information, see 23 (numerology) . Jambi is a wish-granting genie in the TV show Pee-wee's Playhouse . "Jambi" is an Indonesian Province in Sumatra, which was once part of a powerful kingdom with a rich sultan who lived an opulent lifestyle. The setting reinforces the message that family and friends are more important than wealth. Jambi is also Finnish for iamb , a metrical foot where an unstressed syllable is followed by a stressed one. Iambic meter is used in the lyrics of the song. [11] The rhythm used just before the talk box/guitar solo in Jambi plays out in such a way that it "writes" out '3, 2, 1' in morse-code"

When you pissed all over my black kettle.
You must have been high!
Who are you to wave your finger?
So full of it
Eye balls deep in muddy waters
Fuckin' hypocrite

Liar, lawyer, mirror, show me. What's the difference?
Kangaroo done hung the guilty with the innocent.

Now you're weeping shades of cozened indigo
(Musta) got lemon juice up in your eye
When you pissed all over my black kettle.
You must've been...

So who are you to wave your finger?
Who are you to wave your fatty fingers at me?
You must have been out your mind

Eyeballs deep in muddy waters
Ganja? P-lease!
You must have been out your mind

rosetta stoned
Alrighty, then ... "picture this if you will".

10 to 2 AM, X, Yogi DMT, and a box of Krispy Kremes,
in my "need to know" pose, just outside of Area 51
Contemplating the whole "chosen people" thingy
when a flaming stealth banana split the sky
like one would hope but never really expect
to see in a place like this.
Cutting right angle donuts on a dime
and stopping right at my Birkenstocks,
and me yelping...
Holy fucking shit!

Then the X-Files being,
Looking like some kind of blue-green Jackie Chan
with Isabella Rossellini lips, and breath that reeked of
vanilla Chig Champa
Did a slow-mo Matrix descent
Outta the butt end of the banana vessel
And hovered above my bug-eyes, my gaping jaw,
and my sweaty L. Ron Hubbard upper lip,
and all I could think was:
"I hope Uncle Martin here doesn't notice
that I pissed my fuckin' pants."
So light in his way,
Like an apparition, [that]
He had me crying out,
"Fuck me
It's gotta be
the Deadhead Chemistry
The blotter got [right] on top of me
Got me seein' E-motherfuckin'-T!"

And after calming me down
with some orange slices
and some fetal spooning,
E.T. revealed to me his singular purpose.
He said, "You are the Chosen One,
the One who will deliver the message.
A message of hope for those who choose to hear it
and a warning for those who do not."
Me. The Chosen One?
They chose me!!!
And I didn't even graduate from fuckin' high school.

You'd better...
You'd better...
You'd better...
You'd better listen.

Then he looked right through me
With somniferous almond eyes
Don't even know what that means
Must remember to write it down
This is so real
Like the time Dave floated away
See, my heart is pounding
'Cause this shit never happens to me

I can't breathe right now!

It was so real,
Like I woke up in Wonderland.
All sorta terrifying
I don't wanna be all alone
While I tell this story.
And can anyone tell me why
Y'all sound like Peanuts parents?
Will I ever be coming down?
This is so real
Finally, it's my lucky day
See, my heart is racing
'Cause this shit never happens to me

I can't breathe right now!

You believe me, don't you?
Please believe what I've just said!
See the Dead ain't touring
And this wasn't all in my head.
See, they took me by the hand
And invited me right in.
Then they showed me something
I don't even know where to begin.

Strapped down [to] my bed
Feet cold [and] eyes red
I'm out of my head
Am I alive? Am I dead?
Can't remember what they said
God damn, shit the bed.

Hey ...

Overwhelmed as one would be, placed in my position.
Such a heavy burden now to be the One
Born to bear and bring to all the details of our ending,
To write it down for all the world to see.

But I forgot my pen
Shit the bed again ...
Typical.

Strapped down [to] my bed
Feet cold and eyes red
I'm out of my head
Am I alive? Am I dead?
Sunkist and Sudafed *
Gyroscopes and infrared
Won't help, I'm brain dead
Can't remember what they said
God damn, shit the bed

I can't remember what they said to me
Can't remember what they said to make me out to be the hero
Can't remember what they said
Bob help me!
Can't remember what they said

[We] don't know, [and we] won't know (x12)

God damn, shit the bed!
