A member of the Hells Angels is facing as many as 12 years in prison if found guilty of several felony charges including drunken driving and causing an injury and assault with a deadly weapon, a pool stick, stemming from a bar fight at Newbury Park earlier this year.On Wednesday, Ventura County Superior Court Judge John Dobroth ruled during a preliminary hearing that there is sufficient evidence to hold Brandon Thomas Mundell, 26, for the trial. Mundell will be arraigned Sept. 20, Dobroth said.Mundell who lives in the San Fernando Valley, and two other Hells Angels went to the Take Five bar in Newbury Park and got into a fight with patrons Jan. 19. The trio went to the bar to challenge and fight with rival motorcycle gang members, the Mongols, who hang out at the bar and have a chapter in Camarillo, according to police.Brandon's lawyer Michael Cavalluzzi asked the judge to reduce the felonies to misdemeanors because it was simply a bar fight where one man was hit with pool sticks three times. He suffered two welts on his rear and shoulder, Cavalluzzi noted.Ventura County Sheriff's Deputy Mark Grambling suffered abrasions on his leg and bruising after accidentally being hit by Mundell as he drove his motorcycle, according to prosecutor Derek Malan.Cavalluzzi argued that the injuries weren't severe, and the three Hells Angels could have done much more bodily injury than just cause two welts. Mundell brandished a knife, but he made no effort to attack any of the three patrons involved in the fracas who were trying to keep the Hells Angels from entering the bar by blocking the entrance, Cavalluzzi argued to the court."This is simple assault," Cavalluzzi said.Ventura County Sheriff's Deputy Brian Baker said police got a call from bar patrons about 1:40 a.m. that there were three Hells Angels at the bar and they were "acting like idiots."Mundell also is charged with three felony counts of exhibiting a deadly weapon and being an unlicensed driver, a misdemeanor.Ventura Police Department Officer Michael Brown testified Mundell told police that he went to the Take Five to see "if he could get jumped" by Mongols. Brown said the Mongols have a "long-standing feud" with Hells Angels.Mundell, who brandished a knife, was trying to prove that the Hells Angels aren't afraid of the Mongols or anybody else, said Brown, a gang expert.Prosecutors are charging Mundell with the special allegation of acting for the benefit of a criminal street gang, the Hells Angels, with the specific intent to promote, further and assist in criminal conduct by gang members.Brown testified that the Hells Angels are involved in criminal activities such as the sale of methamphetamines, assaults, murder and attempted murder. However, he said, some of the members are simply motorcycle enthusiasts who don't commit crimes.Mundell belongs to the San Fernando Valley Chapter of the Hells Angels, which has at least 19 members, Brown said.Copyright 2006, Ventura County Star.
