About Me
“I want people to know the truth a bout life, what’s real, and also enjoy the fantasies of life through music. I want my music to take people to another place away from their problems and inspire them.â€
--Rapper/Producer A-PhlattRapper/Producer A-Phlatt began his music career singing in the Ward Chapel A.M.E. church choir, and gospel choir at Roosevelt Magnet School in his hometown of Peoria, IL. A-Phlatt credits his diverse musical background and early R&B influences for making him the flexible and ecliptic musical producer he is today.
At Loucks Middle School and Manual High School, A-Phlatt, aka Andre Preston Russell, expanded his musical horizons by playing the trumpet, coronet, baritone, flute, and drums under the tutelage of his high school music teacher, George Graves Jr., who A-phlatt credits as one of his major musical mentors.
“(George) always believed in quality and taking pride in the music that you create,†A-Phlatt explains. “He taught us if you don’t take pride in your music, you aren’t really making music.â€
The owner of G Music Studios, Gerald Brooks, is another major influence in giving A-Phlatt musical direction and inspiration in his musical career.
In high school, A-Phlatt began exploring the world of rap by learning to freestyle with his friends. Banging on tables and desks is where he began to hone his beat making skills.
“I know everyone says it, but it’s true. I’ve been doing music all my life,†A-Phlatt said. Inspiration strikes anywhere for A-Phlatt. He began writing lyrics on anything he could get his hands on, including shoeboxes and notebooks stuffed with bus passes, McDonald’s wrappers, receipts, and notebook paper filled with lyrical content.
In 2003, A-Phlatt did a mixed tape called “Off My Chest Volume One†collaborating with rapper Non-Stopp. The first mixed tape A-Phlatt released caught the attention of local DJ Daddy Vic, who played some of his EP in local taverns and bars such as the Excalibur, Andrew’s Lounge (Galesburg, Il.), the Elks Lounge, and the LA Connection. A-Phlatt’s song “I Like Ya Body,†featuring Lil Donz and B-Metts, was featured on Power 92’s “Battle of the Beatsâ€. A-Phlatt also performed this song and was a finalist and runner-up in a talent show called “The Best of the Best.†After the release of his first mixed tape, A-Phlatt began producing tracks and collaborating with Kid Crack, B-Metts, Six, Lil Donz, P-Mac and D- Bradd, J. Soul, Attick Boys, Casino G., Sleep, Farrow, Big Mix and many more. A-Phlatt also collaborated with Darkside Entertainment and released stuff under his own production company called Qumplex Productions.
Some of A-Phlatt’s biggest musical influences are Tim Kelly (Tim and Bob), who has worked with many major industry artists on the west coast. A-Phlatt aspires to follow in the footsteps of Kelly, a Peoria native and Manual High School graduate, who played the same instruments and sat in the same musical section as A-Phlatt did in high school. A-Phlatt also looks up to 50 Cent, Dr. Dre, Kayne West, Al Green, Twista, Dave Hollister and Sisqo for musical inspiration.
A-phlatt’s highly anticipated mixed tape releases “Grown Folks Volume 1†and “Off My Chest Volume 2†displays his versatility, diversity, and artistic growth.
A-Phlatt’s life experiences and change of perspective influenced his decision to release two different mixed tapes that contain a different tone, texture, and perspective.
“Grown Folks†Volume One has an R&B vibe with a social commentary that’s universally understood, and is beyond his years as an artist.
“I was inspired do the mixed tape to show the more mature side of my music,†A-Phlatt explains. “On Grown Folks Volume One, I am rapping about love, relationships, and poverty through the eyes of someone that has seen it all.â€A-Phlatt talks about some of the songs.*â€Your Goneâ€- “That one was inspired by an ex-girlfriend that I had basically at that point in time. It was in a crazy relationship,†A-Phlatt explains. “I went through stuff I never thought I would go through in life. I felt so relieved and at peace when it was over.â€*“Good Timeâ€- a DJ Quick instrumental- “I love to be around my brother (DJ Daddy Vic) because he is a major inspiration on me. It inspires me when he plays my stuff (in a club) that really touches me. This song is about watching the older crowd and a younger crowd mingling. No one has ever rapped about a younger and older crowd mingling together having a good time.â€In contrast “Off My Chest Volume 2†has a more steely tone that contains a streetwise edge reflective of the struggles and a release of the negative energy that surrounded and influenced him as he strives to reach the top of the industry.*“Off My Chestâ€- “The negative energy I am putting out there and all the problems I’ve had with my career. It’s my music career on wax. Off My Chest is about issues that I felt towards other artists. Whether it be local or industry, there are issues I address. I decided to produce two different mixed tapes.â€*“Bitch I’m Crazyâ€-â€Basically, on that track I am dissing another producer and saying what I feel. When I was working with him I felt he did me so wrong. My total intentions were to go under his wing and learn from him, but he didn’t take me seriously. I think about what drives me a lot in my music, because I want to show this person that I can do without you and I am good. I won’t be stopped no matter who hates on me. I am still going to push forward. I am not one to be messed with.â€YEAH! I GOT ONE ON THE WAY.
