All kinds of things, but not many of the things that I'm "supposed" to be interested in at age 23. I'm into theology, philosophy, history, astronomy, other hard sciences (somewhat), computers (waning interest), classic video games, etymology (seriously), parliamentary procedure (kinda, lol), vocabulary-building, religions, and finding out what "spirituality" means.I'm NOT interested in idle socializing, meeting people for the sake of meeting people, horoscopes, ephemeral thrills, current events, inebriation, the latest movies, top 10 books, or politics (though I do not look down on this last pursuit).
I'd like to meet:
Soon I hope to actually study under the great Dr. Peter Kreeft, my personal hero, at Boston College. I'm really not impressed by celebrities; they, if anyone, are "like grass, here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire" (Isaiah 40:6, Matthew 6:30). If you've found a secret in life, I want to meet you.And I want to meet everyone who has ever been important to my beloved, Marcy Treviño!
Music:
All shades of rock, from Metallica to the Beatles. My favorite band is Muse--they produce true art: making something that sounds catchy and making something weird is not art; art is making a song that's both.Marcy has gotten me into country over the past year and a half. I had to learn how to like it; my rock criteria was misapplied to country. I value originality and melody in a rock song; I had to cultivate a taste for tradition and a good story to like country. Try it! It's worth it. I think my favorite is George Strait, but I don't know yet.
Movies:
I don't get around to movies as often as 103% of the population, but I like them just as much as the next guy. I am a sucker for a cool action flick, as long as it's not too cheesy, but I'm trying to get over that, lol. My Church History class has gotten me into European history and that is getting me interested in movies of historical fiction. Too bad they're often cheesy too. Oh well. Call Hollywood the next Wisconsin.
Television:
You know, I paid for an awesome cable package upon moving to Austin, not sure what I'd be spending my time on. I didn't use it once. But I do watch TV on my computer: Simpsons and Family Guy like everybody else, but I also have Ninja Turtles, Beavis and Butthead, Ducktales, Inspector Gadget, and Super Mario Bros. I try to watch the important sporting events, cuz I wanna know what's going on there, but I'm trying to get over this desire also.
Books:
Okay, now THIS is my section. I'm quite the reader; I read while I walk places. I've only seen a couple of other people do this. I thought, "That's my boy!"Anything by CS Lewis (genius of the century), most things by Peter Kreeft, lots of stuff by Anselm, Plato's Republic and Apology, Pascal's Penseés, and I'm getting into GK Chesterton. Don't forget the Bible. I've actually come to a higher view of the Bible (in terms of how amazing it is) by looking at it as a book written by man about the acts of God. The revelation would thus be what is recorded in the Bible, not the Bible itself. Any questions about this are welcome.
Heroes:
If you don't have people throughout time to emulate, get started on it! There are so many amazing ones to pick from: Jesus of course, Socrates, Augustine, Anselm, Francis, Aquinas, Chesterton, CS Lewis, Bonhoeffer, Peter Kreeft. Of course, you have to figure out who you're most like, and I think I will model my life after that of Aquinas or Lewis.
