ABC Sets Spring 2010 as the End for ‘Lost’

Published: May 8, 2007LOS ANGELES, May 7 — ABC announced on Monday that it would broadcast three more seasons of its hit castaway mystery, “Lost,” ending the show in 2010 after a run of six seasons. The announcement has been expected since January, when the creators of the show told a group of television writers that they wanted the network to set a definitive end date for the series.Such a date was necessary, they said, so that they could begin planning how to unravel the multiple mysteries that beset the fictional survivors of Oceanic Air Flight 815, which crashed on an uncharted island en route from Sydney, Australia, to Los Angeles in September 2004.But the move by ABC is nevertheless unusual because networks usually try to milk profits from their successful series as long as possible, a strategy that often results in convoluted story lines, shake-ups among production staff and dwindling fan bases. That is exactly the situation that Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse, two of the show’s executive producers, said early this year that they wanted to avoid. When they announced their desire to set a specific end date to the series at a January meeting of the Television Critics Association in Pasadena, Calif., they surprised even the ABC executives who were attending.“We have always envisioned ‘Lost’ as a show with a beginning, middle and end,” Mr. Lindelof and Mr. Cuse said in a statement, which was re leased over the weekend to The Hollywood Reporter and to the rest of the news media on Monday. “By officially announcing exactly when that ending will be, the audience will now have the security of knowing that the story will play out as we’ve intended.”ABC declined to make its executives and the show’s creators available for interviews.Ratings for “Lost” have slipped this season, as the show’s creators and the network battle several of the series’s unique characteristics. As a serial drama, the show has gradually shed viewers who have not been able to keep up with its multiple, intertwined story lines.Unlike other popular serials like Fox’s “24” and “Prison Break,” which largely begin a new story line each season, “Lost” viewers often find themselves trying to recall details of the backgrounds of multiple characters from years earlier. In addition, the network alienated some viewers this season when it broadcast six episodes beginning in October, then took a three-month break before resuming the series for an uninterrupted run through the end of the season, its third. When the series resumed in February, the network moved it to 10 p.m. Eastern and Pacific times on Wednesday, a move that, while intended to keep it from having to compete against the results show of “American Idol” on Fox, led to a further drop in viewers. In its first season “Lost” was shown at 8 p.m. and was considered to be a show watched together by parents and their teenage children. In its second season, it moved to 9 p.m.The show has continued to be one of the highest-rated among 18-to-49-year old adults, the demographic group for which advertisers pay a premium. According to Nielsen Media Research, “Lost” ranked as the ninth most popular show among those adults in prime time in the last week of April, the most recent week for which statistics are available. This season “Lost” has attracted an average of 10 million households and 15 million viewers each week, according to Nielsen estimates. In its first season the series attracted nearly 11 million households and 16 million viewers. And in recent weeks viewership has fallen below 12 million.Partly because of the time changes, “Lost” is among the most recorded shows on television. ABC said that it gained 18 percent more total viewers through “time-shifted” viewing of episodes recorded on TiVo or other digital video recording systems. And the network said that additional viewers watched episodes that were streamed on ABC.com or sold through iTunes. After the current season the remainder of the series will play out in three 16-episode stretches, with each season’s episodes being broadcast over consecutive weeks without interruption. A 16-week season is relatively short; the first three seasons each comprised more than 20 episodes.By spreading the remaining episodes over three seasons instead of two, however, the network and its ABC Television Studio unit, which produces the show, will ease the production requirements, which in the past have resulted in the show’s convoluted broadcast schedule. The show’s creators said in January that they had always envisioned the series as lasting about 100 episodes. With the finale now set for the spring of 2010, the series will run to 117 original episodes.
