Valda started singing from the time she could talk it’s been said. However, she officially began at the age of 8. She started of in the school choir, and participated in a number of school shows and inter-school choir competitions. She then joined her local Catholic Church choir. When she started her first job as a teacher at the Portsmouth Secondary School, she took up the position of song and dance instructor in the Creative Arts Club. A former beauty queen and model, Valda is no stranger to the stage and performing. She was second runner-up in Ms. Dominica 2000, crowned Ms. Summer 2000 and participated at Ms. West Indies in St. Martin in 2001.The transition to lead vocalist of the Seramix Band in 1999 was quite seamless. During that time the band performed weekly on Rivage Guadeloupe', a French yacht carrying mainly European Tourists. The bands repertoire was very versatile performing a wide variety of music from different genres, including R&B, Zouk, Pop, Reggae and Soca. Valda along with Seramix dominated Carnival in the north of Dominica from 2000, playing at all shows and on the road from J’ouvert to “las lap”. Valda wrote and recorded 5 tracks on the Seramix album of 2004 with Soca and Zouk hits including, Nice up de Party and L’anmou a distance (Sexy boy) Her band was a main stage act at the 2004 World Creole Music Festival, performing alongside bands like Carimi, T-Vice, Rupee and his band. The band traveled to neighboring islands including Antigua to perform before very pleased fans.In July 2005 Valda left the Seramix band and co-founded a new band called AftaShok. The band performed at the week long “Creole in the Park” concert series and was the headlining band for “Creole Bod la Mer”; a National Bank of Dominica production. During the first few months of AftaShok’s existence, Valda recorded 3 tracks which have all received rave reviews in the local media. A turn of events later in the year required Valda to leave the band to pursue a degree in Hospitality Management; however she is currently pursuing a career as a solo artiste.Valda pens her lyrics based on how she feels at any given time. She shifts rather easily between genres, though she has only recorded music in two different genres to date. “I don’t want to be restricted to one type of music, I love music and I’m open to all types of the art form” she says. Ideally I’d like everybody to love my music; therefore I have songs that would target a more mature audience and songs geared at a younger party crowd.”While pursuing other activities outside of music, her passion remains in music. The thrill of seeing people enjoy her work is all the motivation she needs to continue.
