On an 8th grade class trip to Chigaco, IL in 1983, I attempted to record as much urban music as I possibly could with my Radio/cassette recorder. It was the height of the break dance craze and I was one of the American kids caught up in it. Although I lived in a rural area in Michigan's Oceana County, I was fascinated with the hip hop culture and anything urban. Back then it was a far cry fom how it is today. There was no free music to download, in fact, the internet was not invented yet. If I had any money back then, it was spent on rap music casettes. I was proud of my enormous collection of urban music. It was stuff like Run DMC, Fat Boys, Africa Bambata, and a lot of breakdance compilation albums. I was excited to have this oppurtunity to record music from Chicago and compile as many cassettes as I could. I was more excited about the music than I was about the museum of science and industry! The main radio station I recorded from was 102.7 FM. WBMX. Aside from Rap music, they played a style of music that grabbed me even more. It was a style of music that I had never heard before. House. I remembered the frequency of the station and attempted to tune it in back home. Since I was near the coast of Lake Michigan, I could occasionally pick up the signal of WBMX when all of the conditions were right. I would stay in my bedroom and listen to djs like Bad Boy Bill, Julian Perez and others. I was a part of the early house music scene, listening in a small town bedroom, sometimes static was almost as loud as the signal. Some of the music on this site is a tribute to the early House music of the 80's.
