About Me

pas.sion.ate [pash-uh-nit]
adj. 1. any powerful or compelling emotion or feeling, as love or hate.
It's a word that is often lost in the modern world of hustlin', grindin' and the "kill or be killed" mentality. While other DJs might claim to be "all about the money", Royale remains "true school" with his long time interest. As a child, Roy grew fond of music quickly and knew that this art would be more than just a phase. Growing up in Parkdale (Toronto, ON), he was fortunate enough to develop a love for music and escape the lure of the streets, which consumed many childhood friends.
As a reward for good grades, Roy received a set of Gemini turntables as a gift from his parents before entering high school. Without a major urban radio station in Toronto during the mid 90's, he found himself a frequent purchaser of vinyl, everywhere from well known record stores in the city to pawn shops around the way. To compensate for lack of urban music on the airwaves, he found himself making mixtapes for himself and friends to stay current with the music he loved.
In 1995, Roy's family moved to Brampton (northwest of Toronto) and he quickly gained the reputation of "new kid that DJs". With a small buzz around his high school, he began playing school dances and house parties, building his name even further. After years of rocking parties, he felt like he was ready to enter the mixtape league and release something that he could move the whole city with.
2001 was the year that saw Royale release his first official mixtape, Fourth Chamber: The Basement Vol.1
A small run of about 100 tapes were made by dubbing the master copy in his double deck stereo and sticking labels on the tape that he printed off his computer. Although the tape showcased an eager dj, the well received project left listeners and critics wanting more. Roy knew that if he sharpened his skills and worked hard, the rest would eventually fall into place. A year later, he released the now-classic "Dugout" mix cd which showcased underground/street Hip Hop and a more mature DJ. This was the start to a challenge that Royale still embraces today.
In the next two years, he would bless the city with "Dugout 2" and "Dugout 3-Peat", which both certified Roy's status as one of the best young DJs to watch in Toronto. With 3 strong mixtapes circulating the city, he got the opportunity to build with some well established DJs, MCs and industry insiders in the urban community. Royale soon found himself a regular on 105.5FM, 89.5FM and 88.1FM - all of which are considered the top 3 college radio stations in the city. He also participanted in "Style in Progress" and the "416 Graf Expo" - both events are annual festival's celebrating Hip Hop culture in Toronto.
Working on his skills daily, Royale has had the pleasure to play alongside some of Toronto's heavyweights, such as Dj Grouch, Dj P-Plus, Boogeymen, Dj Serious, Dj Jr. Flo, Dj Big Jacks, Dj Law, Dj Linx and the list goes on!
In 2004, he began his weekly residency at Down One Lounge's "Spankdelicious Saturdays" and released "It's too Easy" along with countless "Spankdelicious" related mix cds to critical acclaim. To this day, Roy remains determined to be regarded as one of the best DJs in the city and is enjoying the success of his current mix cd, "Crash the Party Pt.1"
Regardless of what others may be doing, Royale remains true to his roots and sharpens his skills as he continues to make major moves in and around the city.
