"Listen man," a low, scratchy voice booms from the chair across me, "don't write us up with a ton of that cliche shit, you feel me?" The voice is that of Killa K'el aka Allen Price of the group Fenice, in case you're having trouble its pronounced fuh-knee-chay. "K'el" as he's most commonly referred to, is one of three emcee/producers in a unique trio that has rap and hiphop lovers perplexed. As he stands, the light in the room seems to dim. "He's a tall motherf*%ker isn't he?" Another member Phoenix chimes in, he laughs as he takes a swig from his bottle of Heineken, he then offers the bottle to me though I respectfully decline. "Sorry 'bout that," K'el says as he returns to the room with a fresh Corona, "but what I was saying was is don't try to make us out to be like we're so different, or we're doing some crazy shit no other n$ggas could think of. We got it all, we rep the dirty 'cuz we're here, but we got everything, North, South, both coasts, crunk, hiphop, off the wall shit. I'm sick of mothaf%ckas playin' like they something outta this world, we just add our flavor to sh!t." Now, it seems as though I have their attention, because both Phoenix and Daño aka Tha Latin Rebel have turned their chairs toward mine. Daño, the group's latin influence nods his head in agreement, "See the biggest problem with a lot of artists is that they act they're a breath of fresh air, they got a catchy hook or gimmick and then a couple singles later, they're played out. We're no gimmick, we don't have a message, we're track to track, each song stands on it own-" "You never know what direction we're headin'," Phoenix cuts in right before chugging down the last of his Heineken." Daño annoyed, turns his head towards Phoenix, "Remember two seconds ago, when I was talking." The three all burst into laughter, I myself am having trouble trying to keep the group on task. There's a long story behind the formation of "the bird" as they often call themselves. Fenice, again fuh-knee-chay, when translated into English from the italian language means phoenix, the mythical creature that is born from the fire and ashes to bring a rebirth to the earth. It also means rarity, coincidental, perhaps...perhaps not. With dark tracks such as a Mike O production called "DEVIOUS MINDS" which touches on twisted fantasies of committing unthinkable acts, to light but sexually confrontational remixes like "I KNOW," this TREACHEROUS TRIO allows their moods, no matter how unpredictable, to inspire their music just as often as they write about life experiences. Daño continues, "we touch on everything, we try not to get caught up on image, we all bring something different to the table. If we want to get crunk on a track, we bring it crunk, if we want to take down a notch, we're there." Phoenix, who looks more like their manager than another emcee takes the floor. "We stay real to ourselves. If you get caught up in a image, or being a thug, people expect you to be a thug. Not happenin' here. We have no expectations about how we want to be percieved, or even how our music is percieved, we just want to be heard." As I sit on a couch in K'el's home studio, I'm almost the proverbial fly on the wall. The trio is in the middle of pre-production for an upcoming track. As they sound off verses, hooks, and dubs, there is a constant supply of energy. The volume of the room is in a constant motion of peaks and valleys. Splashes of laughter to whispers of forming lyrics. From short arguments that fizzle out as soon the booth door closes to the silence of pen scratch.
