Mae Gentry - Staff
Thursday, May 26, 2005The man a local rapper is accused of killing during a May 10 shooting in DeKalb County was no stranger to trouble.Henry Lee Clark III, a Macon rapper known as Pookie Loc, had been in the Bibb County Jail 20 times, according to Capt. David Davis, a jail spokesman.Clark, who was born in 1976, had been charged with carrying a concealed weapon, possession of cocaine, participating in a criminal gang, aggravated assault and other felonies, Davis said. His body was found near Columbia Middle School three days after the May 10 shooting. An anonymous caller tipped off police to the body's presence in a wooded area on Columbia Drive.Radric "Gucci Mane" Davis, 23, was charged with murder in connection with the shooting at a home on Springside Run in Decatur.Davis was visiting a woman when five men stormed into the house with guns and duct tape, said Davis' attorney, Dennis Scheib. Davis fired at the men, who later fled, the lawyer said."It was self-defense," Scheib said. "They came into the house with the intent to either shoot him or kill him."Davis, whose single "Icy" debuted last week at No. 24 on Billboard magazine's rap singles chart, was promoting his CD "Trap House" in New York when he learned a warrant had been issued for his arrest. He turned himself in to DeKalb police last week.Davis' record label, Big Cat Records, announced Monday it was offering a $10,000 reward to anyone who comes forward with details about the shooting."Icy," which is slang for dripping in diamonds, was recorded with fellow artists Young Jeezy and Boo. Radio station V-103 played the single regularly in December. After the shooting, V-103 radio personality Frank Ski devoted part of his morning show to the rivalry between Davis and his "Icy" collaborator, Young Jeezy. After the release of "Icy," both had singles on the Internet dissing each other.Davis' underground song, "Round One," attacks Young Jeezy. Young Jeezy recorded "Stay Strapped," street lingo that means "carry a gun." In it, he offers a bounty for Gucci Mane's platinum- and diamond-studded necklace.Young Jeezy told listeners on Ski's morning show last week that he had nothing to do with the shooting.Clark was a member of the Macon-based group Loccish Lifestyle. A fund-raiser for Clark's family was held Friday at the Macon nightspot Club Money's, said a club manager. She did not know how much money was raised. On Monday, Davis offered his condolences to Clark's family."As a God-fearing person, I never wanted to see anyone die," Davis said in a statement. "I found myself in a predicament, and, even though there was an attack on my life, I truly never intended to hurt anyone. I was just trying to protect myself."As he sat in the DeKalb County Jail awaiting news about whether he would be granted bond, Davis expressed his feelings in writing. Now as I write this poemTears are rushing down my cheeks.I wanted to be a respected black manLike Big Cat and Frank Ski . . .They say that I'm a murdererBut I do not believe it.So pray tonight for Gucci ManeAnd even pray for Jeezy. At press time, Davis was the only one charged in the incident, Officer C. Hughes, a DeKalb police spokesman, said.Anyone with information is asked to call Scheib at 404-688-4844 or 404-617-0017 or DeKalb County Homicide at 404-294-2571.--- Staff writer Sonia Murray contributed to this article.A MACON RAP ARTIST IS DEAD AND AN ATLANTA RAPPER IS ACCUSED OF KILLING HIM.
