I'm a writer, journalist, poet. I've published a total of six books so far. Come March 2009, I'll have a new novel, Ruins , set completely in Cuba, with Akashic Books.
My translation into Spanish of Junot Díaz's The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao has just been published by Vintage en Espanol. The Random House Mondadori version in Europe came out in June to critical raves (for the trans itself as well as the novel).
My other books include Havana Noir (Akashic, 2007), This is What Happened in Our Other Life (A Midsummer's Night Press 2007), Days of Awe (Ballantine/Random House 2001), Memory Mambo and We Came All the Way From Cuba So You Could Dress Like This? (both from Cleis).
I'm interested in memory, in how we see ourselves vs how we're perceived, in power dynamics, in beauty and tragedy and violence, in language, in the Caribbean, in Cuba, in Havana, in notions of subjectivity, in almost any kind of music, in travel, in performance, in odd and little known history.
