Early life

I was born in coastal Karnataka, India in a Bunt family and I sm a native speaker of Tulu. I currently lives in Mumbai. I attended St Anthony Girls' High School in Chembur and then went to Podar College. I was the captain of the baseball team. I also have black belt in karate.
Film career

I made my debut in the murder mystery, Baazigar (1993) with Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol. The film did well.I also had a success with Main Khiladi Tu Anari (1994). However, succeeding films -- of which I made many -- did less well at the box office. I won critical acclaim in 2004 with my performance as an AIDS vicitim Phir Milenge.My 2005 film Dus was a popular success. I was also a part of Mani Ratnam's stage show, Netru, Indru, Naalai.
I appeared with my sister in the film, Fareb.
I has been nominated three times for "Best Actress" at the Filmfare awards. I have also appeared in the PeTA India campaign ads.MySpace
