But the road less traveled is usually the one bearing the footsteps of the true innovators - the people with their own vision, their own style. People like Focus. Little did he know he would be drafting a blueprint for the future of Hip Hop. Effortlessly, Focus has purveyed the perfect blend of old school Hip Hop and today’s lyricism mixed with an ultra-sexy machismo. This is his ascension to relevance and the return of the Boom Bap. – Get Focus
Born September 9, 1985 in Brooklyn, New York, Focus (Russell Trevino) began rapping at the age of 15. At age 20 he performed as an opener for Houston, Texas elite Lil Flip. He established Villin Squad Music and entertainment in 2006 to expand the Villin Squad moniker. The general public would first be introduced to Focus on Villin Squad's Pistol City mix tape series. The Pistol City 2 project gave the critically-acclaimed poet a massive cult following. Four months later Focus released Age of the empire. Age of the empire is a collage of Focus most renowned archived work. This collective release furthered his notoriety and garnered respect amongst his underground peers. In early 2007, Focus engulfed the upstate New York Southern Tier region with the Hood 2 Hollywood mix tape hosted by DJ Izm. Highlights on the disc include "Move’n It Crazy," an outstanding R&B collaboration with singer Haz and production by Chris Cohen as well as the fiery Busta Rhymes "Hurt you" Re-mix featuring Eminem. Here Focus delivers 16 bars in rapid succession meshing seamlessly with Hip Hops aforementioned royalty. “Strictly Business” is out this summer and is Focus strongest release ever. Hard-hitting hip-hop, with a respectful nod to R&B and the founding fathers of Hip Hop. The set opens with powerful production from Chris Cohen on the club laced “Chemistry” (Focus featuring Haz)and continues with one of three Focus produced tracks “Hey Girl” and Gwilikerz fiery “I’ma Make It”. “Strictly business” is pure artistry that seems to forewarn listeners of what's to come. “The stuff that is underground will be mainstream soon,” says Focus. Crafting music to meet industry standards has never been part of what I do. There's no pressure on me to keep up with the Jones’s. I ain't never tried to keep up with none of that. I just do what I do and let the chips fall. It's just living and learning and sticking to the format. I’m the product of 2 decades of Hip Hop so every song on this street album has history. Just listen and remember. This is a true representation of myself and those who’ve came before me.
