bad movies, good movies, monsters (but not slashers -- they are boring -- and NO TORTURE PORN), debunking crap on the internet (snopes.com, here I come). If you send me warnings about kidney snatchers, I WILL come and snatch your kidney!
I'd like to meet:
my friends more often. I have wonderful friends. I don't see enough of them. Parties, work, occasional nights out. I'm tired and too old to sleep it off on the floor anymore. I'd like to see my family more often. I have relatives I've never met.
Music:
Eclectic. Oingo Boingo. John Prine. The Roches (Got to see them recently!). Laurie Anderson. Marc Cohen. Woodie Guthrie. Arlo Guthrie (met him). Squeeze. Much Warren Zevon. Vivaldi. Bizet. Think the most beautiful music ever written is the Flower Duet from Lakme, and I hate what's been done to it -- except in "The Hunger." "Astronauts and Heretics" by Thomas Dolby gets plugged in late at night. KT Tunstall (but who doesn't?) Bruce Cockburn. Joni Mitchell. The Rude Girls. Dolly Parton is a Goddess! So are Emylou Harris and Bonnie Raitt (Got to see her recently!). Janis Ian is hilarious in person, you'd never guess. Mary Chapin Carpenter. Nat King Cole. Johnny Mathis. Artie Shaw wins over Glenn Miller, but just by a hair. Just a start of the list.
Oh, gosh! How can I neglect "Those Darn Accordions?" I have traveled many a mile to see them. Just bought 5 copies of their new CD -- Xmas is covered! And Gove Scrivenor? One day I said "I'll see him the next time he's in town." Little did I know that the next time would be 25+ years later. And how could I not mention Utah Phillips?
Movies:
Hublet & I have entire conversations that are nothing but lines from "The Producers" (the original) and "Eating Raoul." "Earth Girls Are Easy" is a favorite. The original Universal Monsters. Godzilla -- even the American one. Horror and sci-fi geek. Don't get me started. "Spinal Tap," "Best in Show," and all of Christopher Guest's work. And while I may hate it hate it hate it, I can't thank Jim Blanton, Rob Floyd and the glory that is Fantasmo enough for subjecting me to "Gymkata." If you thought "Plan 9" was bad, you ain't seen nothing yet!
Television:
First of all, check out madblood.net. TV show goes into cyberspace! Yeah! I am religious about "Daily Show"and "Colbert Report." I have recently converted from CSI on Thursdays to the "Scrubs" and "30 Rock" hour. Too funny to miss. Also love "Last of the Summer Wine," "Two and a Half Men," "Simpsons." Love "Monk" -- it's a good thing I don't date, my Friday nights are taken. "Eureka" on Sci-Fi when I remember to watch it, and have gotten hooked on "Boston Legal." We always knew Shatner had no shame. I am truly enjoying "Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip," and I think John Goodman should be in the series on a semi-regular basis. Love the way Sorkin writes for him. And how could I not confess, I watch Food Network constantly. Rachel Ray taught me not to be so uptight about cooking. I wished she tipped better on "$40 a day," though. "Cops" is a guilty pleasure. A two hour on Sunday guilty pleasure, if I'm not careful. No one asked about radio, but I do listen to "Prairie Home Companion," "Wait Wait Don't Tell Me" and "Car Talk" every week. I also catch "The Splendid Table" and "This American Life" when I can, sometimes on line. And why isn't there a website space in this profile?????
Books:
Lots. Yep. Florence King. Daniel Pinkwater. Harry Potter series. Have read every thing by Agatha Christie I could get my hands on (usually twice). Also love Rex Stout, P.D. James. Own two different annotated Draculas, an annotated Alice (as in "Wonderland" and "Through the Looking Glass"). Movie & monster anthologies are very helpful. Adore giant coffee table books about movies, and was fortunate to get TWO of them about Ray Harryhausen -- and to get them autographed. "Dykes to Watch Out For" is my favorite soap opera comic strip. I read it online, in "Funny Times," and buy the books. And hey, if you don't know about "Funny Times" -- find out! It's a major hoot! Delivered to your mailbox monthly, it's humor, politics, and fun. www.funnytimes.com
Heroes:
my father. He's gone through terrible tragedy and still laughs and loves and tells me stories about the day I was born. I thank him for my ability to sing, my sense of humor, my love of stories, and so much more. And I have to add to this -- at last. I have to add my husband and mother-in-law. I watch them get up, day after day, and do what needs to be done is just awe-inspiring. They lived with a person with dementia for many years (my part was small). It was so hard, and we were lucky he was amiable, but totally re-working your life, your house, your car, every move with someone else in mind is so difficult. I am humble before them.
