dj richio suzuki probably finest dj to come out of scunthorpe ? well i dont know any others so its not difficult. i love to spin a VINYL selection of funk/soul/jazz/old skool hip hop/ downbeat/nu jazz/rock n pop/anything good basically, that's my policy be open minded.
i'm 40 and proud of it, happy to have lived through so many great times from northern soul, breakdance to jazz dance, acid house, house in its heyday, and now just enjoying everything good, old and new.
started out aged 13 in scunthorpe collecting and dancing to northern soul went first all niter at 15..also did backing vocals for brothers punk band.
at 16 breakdance scene came along. followed by my passion for soul weekenders.
started djing in back rooms of north east soul funk scene before moving to london. quickly discovered pirate radio, got my own show and got myself into the then very new house scene. played at southport weekender alongside graeme park, carl cox, danny rampling. other gigs included club uk, and dates in denmark and luxembourg.
then i moved into playing in the backrooms of big clubs such as ministry of sound and malibu stacey where i played an eclectic selection of old skool rap, disco, soul, pop and rock, it was a great era in fashion the glam club days. after the backroom scene came along bars with dj's, then a new idea.
in the upmarket bar scene, i played most cool bars in the late 90s onwards including nearly 3 years at st martins lane hotel and 5 years at the saint, and i've been at met for over 6 years.
i played and helped phillip salon organise many of his legendary events.
nye 1999 i did a 7 hour solo set at ministry of sound, who else has done that ?
2000 the millenium i played in koh samui thailand at the best hotel on the island.
other recent highlites include dannii minogue's birthday party, boy george taboo launch and agent provocateur party.
best gig abroad has to be japan, my favourite country.
recently i have co-promoted a japanese nite called samurai and guests have included keb darge and patrick forge amongst others.
i also had a one year run at 333 club with a nite called hip pop, we played trashy rap ala mc hammer, vanilla alongside proper old skool breaks and had breakers, mc, and beatboxer mr mouth.
we have also done a stage show called beat street at venues including cafe de paris, with breakers, mc, scratch dj, and beatbox. i also played in the top of the pops star bar of the final 6 months of the show.
i've dabbled in mash ups and had success with a certain white stripes mix.
i feel happy to have played in so many different scenes, instead of been stuck in one scene. my other passion is fashion and collecting. i recently did an exhibition of run dmc memorabilia in london's adidas concept store.i probably have the biggest run dmc collection in the world.i also collect old skool gear such as troop and ll cool j, public enemy and beastie boys items, i'm planning an old skool hip hop website in the future.my new exhibition and sale of my old skool collection has just start at the pymca gallery in east london ,please check it out it run,s till end of jan see my blog for details ......this december i do a mini tour in japan playing tokoyo ,osaka and nagoya..see blog for details and updates ,if you are in japan come along
