Books:
I love so many! Books have been such an inspiration to me throughout my life. I re-read favorites over and over - a good book is like an old friend!_______Some of my favorite books in no particular order: The Perilous Guard - Elizabeth Marie Pope; Pretty much anything Piers Anthony has ever written; The Anne Rice Vampire series; Reefsong - Carol Severance; GloryLane - Alan Dean Foster; The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy Series - Douglas Adams (Haven't seen the movie - but trust me the book has got to be better - nothing compares to his hilarious style of writing!); The Shining, Pet Cemetary and Cujo - the amazing Stephen King; Ariel - Steven R. Boyett; The Wolfwalker Series - Tara K. Harper; WitchDame - Kathleen Sky (hence my screenname); The 'John Carter of Mars' & the Venus series - Edgar Rice Burroughs; The Jurassic Park Series - Michael Crichton; Blood and Chocolate - Annette Curtis Klause; Feed - M.T. Anderson; Sweetblood - Pete Hautman; Web of the Chozen and The Well World Series - Jack L. Chalker; and so many more!
I know the list is long - be honest, your eyes glazed over about 7 books ago, but these books are worth looking at. You might notice that many of them would be considered YA books and I don't really read romance novels (I hate porn novels that imitate literature) - How I wrote a Romance novel full of sex is beyond me! But trust me, mine does have a deeper level of thinking to it. There is no sex in it just for erotic shock value - I wanted the characters and story to feel true (after you give in and believe in my vampires that is)And while it is a romance, there is plenty of weird/psychic/blood/zombie-horror stuff in there too!
These were some of my greatest influences - Young Adult tales of angst, medieval/historical tales, magical sci-fi fantasy, disturbing technological thrillers, and good old fashioned horror. All dosed with comedy, emotion and characters you can relate to. Put deep,full characters anywhere (modern day New York or New Orleans, 16th century England, another human-settled planet in the near future or with alien races in an entirely undiscovered solar system!) and the story will work, as long as the author is passionate about it! Some of the authors listed above are absolutely BRILLIANT! I admire them for their blending of humanity and imagination.
