My Interests

Maryland and Virginia history, Austrian and German history, military history...literature in general...Germanic and Southern culture...silent and early sound movies...music and dancing...

Music:

All fox-trots, all the time. I've made vague efforts, for years, to pass myself off as being interested in classical music, but really I just think of it as background music for dinner parties. What I really like is the frantic dance music of the '10s, '20s and '30s. I also love Austrian and Hungarian operetta. Nothing too serious. Music that wants me to think ends up just irritating me. Favorite song of all time: "Valencia." Also high on the list: Just the Same, In the Sing Song Sycamore Tree, Elizabeth, Ich hab' dich Einmal Gekuesst, The Vamp, Oriental Love Dreams, The Sheik, Turkish Towel. Favorite bands: Fred Waring and his Pennsylvanians, Paul Whiteman and His Orchestra, Roger Wolfe Kahn and his Orchestra, Die Weintraubs, Comedian Harmonists, Dajos Bela und sein Orchester

Movies:

No talking, please. A well-presented silent movie--in a real picture palace, thanks, with either an orchestra or big movie organ playing accompaniment--is one of the truest forms of art. (Live theatre blows.) Now, I do like some of the early talkies, but mostly just because they tend to feature music that I like. Favorite silents: IT, Orphans of the Storm, Parisian Love, Mantrap, Rolled Stockings, The Thief of Bagdad Favorite shriekies: Footlight Parade, Paramount on Parade, Gold Diggers of 1933 Favorite later talkies: Oh, hell, might as well admit it: Gone with the Wind, The Great Man's Lady, Father Goose, South Pacific, Flying Leathernecks

Television:

Make it go away.I still can't figure out why I should be excited about sitting in my crappy living room with a stupid little talking picture box when the fashionable gilt-and-velvet Parkway Theatre is around the corner. But, I'll make exceptions for M*A*S*H* and Cheers. I also have to admit that I really got a kick out of Friends, and I dig Gilmore Girls. So sue me.

Books:

As a good W&M English major, I'm fully capable of, and enjoy, reading The Canterbury Tales in middle English. And then, English lit stops existing for a few centuries...I pick up again with Dickens and Thackeray, for the more academic sort of thing. Anything Fitzgerald pleases me immensely. I've lately conceived a passion for Galsworthy (of Forsyte Saga fame) and Dawn Powell. Hemingway, I'm afraid, leaves me cold. Booth Tarkington is a guilty pleasure. Essayists: Mencken, of course; but Florence King is worthy of all adulation.

Heroes:

How's this for eclectic?Generals Lee and Jackson, Emperors Franz Josef and Wilhelm II, Reed Howes, Clara Bow, Myrna Loy, and, of course, the men and women of the United States Armed Forces. OORAH, et al.
