"... "Elephant Decision" is Dead Air's equivalent of "Walk on the Wild Side", while the retro-futurist mode of "Electrical Heart" resembles early Human League fronted by Patti Smith..."

"The New York-based Rainy Orteca is part of Joan as Police Woman, and boasts work with, among others, Antony and the Johnsons, Rufus Wainwright and Lou Reed on her CV. Her alias is inspired by the times she failed to turn up for a radio show she presented. Aptly, there is something of the late-night, into-the-ether confidence about her debut album, its part-spoken vocals conveying a jadedness that evokes the small hours perfectly. The scatter-gun delivery, trash aesthetic and electro-analogue tension that course through songs such as Elephant Decision and Forever conjure up vividly the mid- to late1970s New York of Reed, Patti Smith and Television. Her birth certificate insists Orteca wasn’t there herself; Dead Air suggests otherwise."

"Rainy Orteca is probably best known to lovers of less mainstream music as the bassist from Joan as Police Woman, where she also plays second fiddle to frontwoman Joan Wasser, former squeeze of Jeff Buckley. By contrast, Orteca’s debut solo EP, Dead Air, sees her play everything herself – bass, guitar, synthesizer – as well as providing beats and vocals. Dead Air is a breath of fresh air compared with her Police Woman output and undeniably accomplished, if not arresting, with strummy harmonies abandoned in favour of trendy electronics and Orteca’s breathy, whispered vocals. Dead Air most comes to life on the soaring “Widdow†(sic) and the down-and-dirty “Electrical Heartâ€. But with only six tracks at three minutes apiece, it’s all over before you’ve even drawn breath."

"...Dead Air at their most melodic yet maintaining that darkly brooding edge; Orteca singing in a sugar sweet swoon whilst foreboding beats and industrial electro noise rumble ominously in the background. A delicately pitched, darkly intoxicating debut from Dead Air, this is a record that expertly balances its mood between darkness and light; Rainy Orteca a singer, songwriter and musician capable of the truly mesmerising."
