In a club last Thursday, I saw a musician named Sweatshop Kid from Issaquah Washington give his first live performance. He sounded like Elvis on ketamine, pounding a Microkorg. Immediately I was reminded of another electronic group, from bygone days, with an ear for sassy folk and R&B songs done on electronic instruments. Suicide are a punk duo consisting of Marty Rev and Alan Vega that came out of NYC around 1980, opening up for the Clash on one of their European tours.Suicide employ the heavy pseudo-Biblical themes of other No Wave era bands and Sweatshop kid sings about the garment industry, so there's a certain divergence thematically. Obviously, I'm a huge fan of both groups.
