Joey Amens love of music began at an early age when he first started learning to play the guitar. He was always described as a talented guitarist learning and adapting music quickly but his love of dance music was far greater. He chose to quit his studies on the guitar, from much dismay from his music teacher and began his journey through his love of dance music. He soon realized that dance music wasn’t just a hobby; it was his life.
His began making mix tapes for friends with the likes of DJ Bobo, Sash and La Bouche always being a favourite. Purchasing cds such as Wild, Central Energy and his ever favourite Skitzmixs cds Joey began to listen to them whenever he could, he wouldn’t just listen to the song that was being played he would analyse it, which sound was which and wondered how the artist created such songs. This was the spark that lighted his passion that still continues to this day.
At the age of 14 he rose out of his shell and began to learn the mechanics of dance music. Funny enough his Sony Playstation was his first experience with making music. Having mastered the program quite quickly he ventured into the art of megamixing. At the age of 16 he created his first megamix. Although not quite up to the calibre of a Nick Skitz megamix it taught him the fundamentals of multi track editing and beat matching. Megamixing became a huge passion for him but also grew to another love, Djing. This led him buying a set of decks and a mixer.
At first he began to Dj friends parties and functions that gave him a lot of experience. Word got around that Salt was running a Dj competition and Joey quickly took up the opportunity. Being selected as one of the entries he blew away the judges with a set of vocal uplifting trance. He came first in the competition and was offered a residency but shirtily after that Salt closed down. He stopped his art for a while to focus on his studies and family, but his love of music was growing by the hour.
At 19 while on time off he created a different sort of megamix, a slower tempo house oriented one aimed at the masses. This saw the mix being played on the on all major radio stations such as the Hot 30, Nova and Kiss FM which received great reviews and comments. You know when you have listened to the edits of Joey Amen. Whether producing for radio or listening to one of his bootlegs or megamixes, his cutting and slicing skills are unsurpassed blending and mixing a style that only can be describes as his unique sound.
His style consists elements of Electro, Progressive Vocal Trance to the pounding sensation of Tribal and Tech Trance. His love of all forms of dance music can be clearly heard in his sets with a pounding tribal theme and euphoric melodies a constant leaving all party goers with a smile on their face and a fresh sound to their ears. In a short amount of time he has developed a reputation for his energetic antics and versatility behind the decks. He is open to different styles of music and is always incorporating fresh and innovative ideas to drive the crowd. To date he has played in some of Melbourne’s most well known clubs and events.
