DARKHALF

Swindon..This is Swindon!!! :D

About Me

Born in 1973 as Robert Winterflood raised by a musical family, Darkhalf was raised listening to old Motown, Beatles, funk, Soul, Blues, Rock you get the jist he was raised up listening to all types of music influencing him to go his own way.Always a lover of music in general He picked up an instrument, The flute and then later in life the Tenor Saxaphone on both of which he has Grade 8 royal school of music certificates. However this clashed with his love of Hip Hop back in the early 80s. So embarrassed by what he was playing he bought some record decks...That was it then...Every minute he could get he was mixing hip hop and making mixtapes on his 4 track to sell to his friends in town. He remembers the old school days well, maxing out with Demo, Jemfunk, Acme, Dangerus and all the rest of the crew in town who were mostly Graffiti writers back then ;)) They had Hip hop jams in a big way back then so Darkhalf whos name was Robee Dee back then started to get into rhyming and got involved with a crew called The Fictional Characters alongside Dj Stak, Vitamin Cee and Mc lyric. Now this is the funny part and what turned Robee into a producer and not an mc...Back at one of the jams mcs Cello and Spye were waiting to battle him and Shure. They literally killed him off and Robee threw the mic down in anger and left and therefore turned to production. Always a dj first he started to make Hip hop beats at first but then the Dnb scene hit him in the face like a slab of concrete...He hooked up with fellow friends who already had a free party crew called ' The Brave Nu Kru. They used to rock nights at The Prince of Wales in Swindon every Friday and then off to london to hook up with Headfuk who are another free party crew from Hackney and thereabouts..In the Brave nu cru there was a D.j called Gambia aka Joe who built his own p.c and got together a music studio of such in his room where Darkhalf emerged..This was back in 1999 and he must admit his first Drum n Bass track was complete rubbish and vowed never to write such an atrosity again...Always determined to do better you can tell the levels of productions have upped over the time he has been making fat beats.. He doesnt do this for money either he does it for the love of it and music itself has saved him numerous times from going completely mad.Back in 9/9/03 on the 1xtra Double L show Darkhalf also won the dubplate competition as you will see from the dubplate he won in the pic below.Darkhalfs also played at various nightclubs too in Bath (Bassline), Bristol (Maze club and the Croft), London (The dungeons, All nations and others long forgotten), and Swindon (Brunel Rooms, The underground, The prince of wales,Fusion and the 12 bar supporting Epoclive) as part of a crew and also as a solo d.j.. The past few years have been a tough ride for the man his father died last February and he is going to dedicate the rest of his life trying to do better as his Father would of loved.. At the moment he is also a part of the Urban Dynamiks outfit that has a show on www.krisisdnb.com every saturday at 1600-1800 gmt. He also likes to help out Inm8 every now and then as the one they call Xcessive is one of his close friends and one of the best d.js in the south west of the U.K if not the best to be fair!! They have made a huge impact on the Swindon Dnb nightlife holding nights in various clubs in Swindon... Such an artistic mind doesnt stop at just D.jing and production..Darkhalf is also a Graffiti artist and has done work with Ollie Struktur and the Defcom records camp!!! He would like to thank Si aka Kryptic minds for the support over the years as he never knew he would actually chat to the man over the net let alone on the phone :D hes a big inspiration to say the least and an amazing producer too (check out the Lost all faith album he produced with Leon Switch. Its such an amazing album). Darkhalf designed the very first Defcom Records tag t shirt and still sports it every now and then at his gigs..As a graffiti artist he is also part of a crew although now not an active writer on the streets he is more now a designer of such painting tops and trainers (sneakers) to suit the client.. Hit me up if you want any designs done for a price ;) Peace people, remember spread the love and stop all the hating!!! No guns, No knives and no drugs= A good life!!!

Influences: I Belive what you were raised up with and lived with is the strongest influence of all. I write Drum n Bass and to be fair I would call DnB the junkyard of all styles of music ;) Think im wrong?? Ok then, where do the breaks come from?? Rock, Funk, Electro, Hip Hop The list is so vast so all in all all music is my influence!! The synths also?? Techno, House , 80s pop music, Electro again the list is huge!! I grew up through all the stages which I am very proud to of been a part of..One of the biggest influences for getting my tunes the way they are is Simon at the exchange..If you want to learn how to master?, get your tune done by him because he does help you make it easier..I basically learnt more of him than I have off anyone in the whole music scene fullstop so much respect to Simon Davey who I will add is also a very nice person to talk with about production..As far as Music artists go i will start with who has influenced me the longest... Here goes.. Grand Wizard Theadore, Paul Hardcastle-Zero one was a dope L.P, Afrika Bambatta, Man Parrish, Malcom Mclaren, Jazzy Jeff, Grandmaster Flash, K K K Kurtis Blow!!! Man is a legend, Kevin Saunderson, Dave Stewart, Morgan Khan at Streetsounds for pushing a style of music into the U.K that Im proud to have been into which is electro, Hank Shockley, Rick Rubin, Dr Dre, D Mob, Bomb The Bass, Killa Instinct, Katch 22, Gunshot, London Posse- Rodney P, Hidden Identity, Bushkiller, Hijack the terrorist crew!, Simon Harris- got me into using samples and scratching records, Norman Cook, John Carpenter the film maker- His synths are old school but Im so into them, Way out west, Chicane back in the day before chart success and Coldcut!!!The list could go on for years so I will finish it off with some Drum N Bass influences.... Kryptic minds and Leon Switch - Si your a legend thanks for the support through my hard times ;) Goldie, Rob Playford at Moving Shadow, Renegade Hardware camp, Dylan , Tech Itch, Dom Angus- Mans a legend also, Freak Recordings, Outbreak Records, Bkey, Grooverider and Fabio, Bailey, Tee Bee- Pioneer of a certian sound if you ask me ;) , Sabre, Trace, Loxy and Ink, Digital and Spirit, Ed Rush and Optical, Ram records, Klute, Barcode Recordings, Chase n Status, Kenny Ken and Ray Keith..Again im into far to much Drum N Bass so I will just leave it at that although you will notice no Jump up artists in the list as Im not into that side of DNB... Biggest influence of all time is life itself and i also have to thank my Mother and Father ( R.I.P) for raising me musically aware and for the support also cos it hasn't been easy for them listening to my style of music throughout the years ha ha!!! Good old N.W.A ;) ..
