About Me

Myspace Layouts - Myspace Editor

Beni Williams is an internationally active composer/arranger/producer with a professional track record in commercial audio production; a vanguard jazz/world music artist and 'triple threat' on piano, bass, and percussion; he is expert in music technology, specialising in performance rendering and sound design; and is a research-active lecturer in music, theory, and cultural studies, with numerous creative, academic, and music industry links... That was my CV/Resumé in one sentence - enough, already! Now, here's a brief update on my current music activities: Over the past year, I've produced recordings for seminal jazz-rock saxophonist Ron Caines (East of Eden, Contemporary Jazz Quintet), Grammy nominated American composer/pianist John Serry, British saxophone giant Paul Dunmall, and avant-garde guitarist/composer Philip Gibbs. In concert, I've been playing piano with Colombian Cumbia Queen - the legendary Totó la Momposina, alongside master drummer Marco Vinicio Oyaga and his fantastic Octet, the M-V-8. Back in the studio, I'm currently playing keyboard sessions for Urban dance music producer Rob Smith - working on tracks for a sequel to the highly respected South African 'MELT 2000' remix compilation and, as leader, mixing my own organ trio recording, a double CD, for early release this summer. Hello, and Welcome to My Space...

My Interests

I'd like to meet:

Musicians, artists, and cultural producers whose approach undermines the conventional boundary between composition and improvisation; those who are currently working on cross-cultural performance/recording projects; and those interested in creative collaboration online - through open source file-swapping, editing, remixing, 'versioning', etc. Oh, and of course - hot chicks(!) - joke.On the academic side: serious-minded writers and thinkers on music and culture; in particular, those who share my interdisciplinary research interests, which include: new jazz improvisation, music theory, cultural transmission, artificial intelligence, models of creativity, embodied cognition, urban underground and outsider artists (visual and sonic), Pacific-rim culture, philosophy of music, critical theory, and postcolonial studies.
