FELIX THE DOG
aka F.T.D.
aka k9-Un1T·
Since arriving in San Francisco in 1989, British ex-patriot Felix the Dog has mastered his DJ skills, building a solid reputation as an energetic & exhilarating performer, and keenly dedicated artist.
An unconventioinal and relentless mixer, fiercely utilizing every knob, fader, trick and switch in his reach. His uncompromising ear for quality and dedication to the “ART†thru spontaneous programming, ferocious old-school flair and genre-free policy have established him as a firm fixture and somewhat of an outlaw in the SF UNDERGROUND for almost 20 years ·
Although synonymous with SF electronica and his pioneership of breaks whilst booking and residing SF legendary night, HEKTIC sister to Drum and Bass legend EKLEKTIC, introducing many future icons to the West Coast.
In the mid-90’s, FTD co-founded & resided the award winning “Black Diamond†a groove-tempo, roving venue, after-hours affair. In 1999 he headed the project, “BlackDiamondMusic†(released through Caroline US) a well-received compilation of original music to celebrate six debauched years. FTD’s accompanying “Freeform Funkout†mixCD encompasses the vibe of the skunky soirees. ·
In 1998 FTD shifted focus to pushing big funks and break-beats to a virgin city. His aggressively dissected fusion of breaks, acid funk and driving Jacks soon established The DOG as one of SF’s busiest, non-commercial DJ’s. In 1999 FTD founded ‘HEKTIC’, the outrageously successful Breaks addition to the Drum’n’Bass weekly ‘EKLEKTIC’. Staking a reputation as the “dogâ€-father of Bayside Breaks FTD’s mission was to be the first of the nu-wave breaks nights in the USA, he resided as DJ, Host, MC, sound technician and booking agent for the acclaimed night, which sadly closed it’s doors in 2003. HEKTIC was instrumental in introducing a pleathora of new talent west side. ·
In 2001 during his last European tour FTD rocked well-received sets at the Berlin Love Parade with DJ HYPER and MEAT KATIE, played a 4 ½ hour extended set at Ministry of Sound UK for In-Flight Ent., CHEW THE FAT @ Bug Bar, Brixton for Paul Arnold, the opening of TCR and W9Y’s “HUM†night with RENNIE PILGREM and MEAT KATIE and a Friday evening live DJ set on KISS FM UK. W/ DANNY MCMILLAN who asked him to represent his In-Flight Ent. label in the US. Following two, sold out, one off shows FTD became 30 KHZ UK co-resident, with LEE COOMBS (Thrust recs), touring both the US and EUROPE. ·
In 2003, in an effort to shake the “Breakbeat dj†label, FTD stopped touring and went Underground again, redefining his own brand of Dirty Dance fusion he calls “Gutter-Fly†, Incorporating music of all eras and genres mixed maniacally, yet skillfully, as only the DOG do. Remixing and shredding a live mash-up, strictly for the floor. His knowledge of dance cultures music, history and legends is hard to match. As is obvious when you witness him ‘IN IT’, constantly exploring and pushing, an FTD set is to be seen as much as heard. ·
LEE COOMBS, FREQ NASTY, Z-TRIP, RENNIE PILGREM, BLIM, JONDI & SPESH, MAMMAL, HARVEY, TIM LOVE LEE, JERRY BONHAM and HYPER are all vocal FTD supporters. HYPER rating him, on BREAKSPOLL, as his favorite US DJ. Over the past two decades, FTD has had numerous residencies, music journo/buying and broadcasting gigs to mention. He is a renowned tastemaker who consults on club promo/decor and is currently stage manager for the Masonic St stage @ the massive annual Haight st fair, the longest running and largest street fair in the world.
Since inception in the mid-nineties Felix has been VICE President and Concillerie with Underground SF visionaries and world renowned, balls-out, cutting edge, event-planners GROUNDSCORE. www.groundscore.net
