Electric Penguins
'Goodbye From The Electric Penguins' ****
Using Old Moog synthesizers and a myriad of vintage electronic equipment, this Dublin - based trio has delivered a remarkable debut. "Transatlantic (Part 1)" isn't a million miles away from Gary Numan territory, while the vocoder-heavy "Answer The Phone" melds two facets of Eno's career together - the playful sprite of "Here Come The Warm Jets" and the more introspective soul of "Before And After Science". The highlight is the gorgeous "Too Far" with its Air-like opening and a finale that owes much to Kraftwerk. ...a highly rewarding work and one of the finest domestic releases in months.

ELECTRIC PENGUINS: 'GOODBYE FROM THE ELECTRIC PENGUINS'.
Electric Penguins are an Irish, mostly electronica based three-piece featuring Mark Cummins, Paul Murphy and Sean Quinn. The album is a truly excellent collection of mellow electronic pop sounds with lots of live guitars, pianos and lush Farfisa organs. There are elements of the Postal Service, Schneider TM, early 4AD and plenty more. The vocals are all heavily processed with vocoders and there are lots of background glitchy digital effects. People who like the sounds from Morr Music, City Centre Offices etc. will simply love this record. This is quite simply one of those truly excellent records that deserves a place in every home. Hats off to all involved, I just can't recommend this highly enough.

ELECTRIC PENGUINS: Goodbye From The Electric Penguins.
As well as containing musical passages of intense beauty this compelling album has at least three singles that supersede anything the Irish electro-pop cannon has shot before.Mark Cummins has been involved in the music industry while residing in London but with Electric Penguins cohorts Paul Murphy and Sean Quinn he seems to have found the perfect niche for his ambient, wispy vocal style that harks back initially to a young Bryan Ferry or Paul Haig before revealing an upper register that evokes the icicle delicacy of Sigur Ros.Stylistically the band have pitched themselves between the almost classical tones of Brian Eno’s more ambient work and the chilled-out pop of Air, as the heavily reverbed pianos of instrumental opener Gelb make way for the bouncy Supergirl, an inspiring single that gets the full lash of modernity on it’s vocoder chorus. Soft landing shows how a simple repetitive riff allied with a great vocal can produce a memorable moment especially when its gorgeous melody line is as hauntingly insistent as this. Surprises abound throughout as the band adopt a tease mode when the toy box tinkling of Glass Random falls unexpectedly into the outrageous jazz chord of the year while the playful stomp of Answer The Phone is perhaps the album highlight, bringing to light what Bowie’s Low may have sounded like if he’d been on an ecstacy bender in Berlin instead of a recovering cocaine addict. Coming from nowhere and bursting with supersmart ideas Goodbye From The Electric Penguins is a hugely compelling breath of fresh air.

ELECTRIC PENGUINS: 'Goodbye From The Electric Penguins'.
Whilst delivering an album of melodic atmospheres and a triumph of sound , Electric Penguins have also delivered one of the albums of the year.
