In 1986 five young boys burst onto the music scene conquering all before them. The light may not have shone for long but it sure burned brightly. Their heady mix of stadium-rocking anthems and heartrending ballads, combined with high- energy dance moves, lack of instruments and adoring legions of young girls assures their place in history as the original boy band. They were BoyTown.
BoyTown dominated the charts with five number one singles off their self-titled debut album. Their first world tour Feelin Tough established them as one of the most successful bands of the late eighties.
Their follow up albums Tough Love and Tough Enough produced another string of gold records, with the single Tough Titties becoming the highest selling single of the year.
Their fourth album Love Factory did not manage to scale the lofty heights of their early releases and no singles off this album made it to No.1. The release of the Best of BoyTown also got a cool reception and rumors of a rift with management did little to allay fears that the best of BoyTown was behind them.
In 1992. Benny G released his solo album Benny G, Just Me. He was also romantically linked to British pop sensation Holly who has one of the biggest hits of the year with Ring My Bell. This was the final nail in the BoyTown coffin and the band abandoned their tour on the eve of what would have been a triumphant appearance at the Grammys.
