Movies I've Seen Recently:
King of Kong - This is one of the most entertaining movies I have ever seen. A documentary about going for a world record Donkey Kong score, King of Kong becomes so much more. There's frustrated Steve Weibe trying to overcome being a constant second place. There's a confident video-game champion in Billy Mitchell. There's a conspiracy amongst the record-holders. A slew of emotionally draining events. This is the new gold-standard in documentary film-making. I've never been taken in by real characters in such a way. See this movie.
300 - A cluster-fuck of epic who-gives-a-shit proportion. At any given moment when this movie steps away from it's grotesque action basis I felt compelled to start playing a game on my cell phone; no I don't have ADD. The movie was just too large for it's own good, it wanted to be an epic gladiator film, but at the same time wanted you to feel for characters whose names you will forget upon standing up to leave.
The Departed - Goodfellas in Boston. Probably the best film that's been released in this decade thus far. A rare character driven, interesting plot in a sea of garbage. If you haven't already, see this movie. Despite clocking in at 151 minutes you'll be left wanting more.
Crank - Action, nothing but, in fact when the action stops in this movie the main character slowly starts to die. It has a bit of a ridiculous ending. But it's worth checking out. That is if you like public fornication, running while screaming, and kicks to the face.
Garden State - An interesting perception of modern 20-somethings entanglements and the notion of over-medicating ourselves to near comatose levels. Zach Braff does an excellent job really selling the current generation's apathy towards life.
Eraserhead - Ridiculously good movie. Every shot in the movie is the most extreme choice a director can make; if you don't believe that you can be subtly bludgeoned with a tire iron than see this movie.
The Pink Panther(2006) - It would have been easier for them to just film Steve Martin taking a shit on Peter Sellers grave and any living relatives but then that would imply that anyone who had anything to do with this had any artistic capabilities.
The Matador - A legitimately funny comedy lost in a sea of Big Mommas houses and other assorted awfulness. If you don't enjoy the work of Greg Kinnear and the subtle nuances of Kinnearity he brings to any character, than you don't deserve to be anointed with the word "Kinnearity."
Match Point - Woody Allen's classic neurotic comedy style tightly wrapped in the shell of a pretentious British drama. Witty. Realistic. Only downfall was the pacing of the film. Though the irregular rhythm is meant to add to the suspense of the story, it tends to take your mind else where.
Bottle Rocket - Wes Anderson and Owen Wilson's first full feature writing collaboration makes for excellent cinema. You can really see Wes Anderson's directing style start to take shape in this low-budget gem.
Entourage, Da Ali G Show, Mr. Show with Bob and David, Dream On, The Sopranos, Futurama, The Simpsons, Family Guy, The Critic, Harvey Birdman, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Seinfeld, Heroes, Tom Goes to the Mayor, Tim and Eric's Awesome Show, Great Job!, Other assorted weirdness
