The one I buy over and over to give to friends is Wally Lamb's "She's Come Undone". Like a lot of family stories (not Danielle Steel stuff, more like Anne Rivers Siddons, Charlotte Vale Allen, I do confess to being a huge Nora Roberts fan) Rita Mae Brown-read almost everything she's written, also like Sue Grafton, John P. Pelicanos, Michael Connelly, and Janet Evanovich. I usually appreciate some twisted humor in whatever I'm reading.
