HIP HOP PIONEER/CHOREORGRAPHER/ACTOR/COMMUNITY BEACON
Harlem; 1963; Lamar A. Hill; it was the wintertime when he took his first birth breath and absorbed the soundtrack of the artistic richness that was the backdrop of his particular borough in New York. Year thirteen, he was a fan. Year fourteen, he was the man. Year fifteen, he would expand. In 1978, L.A. and childhood friends Mohandes Dewese (Kool Moe Dee) along with Gabriel Jackson (Spoonie G) and later Kevin Keaton (Special K) would form one of the most lyrically sophisticated groups Hip Hop had ever seen: The Treacherous Three (T3).Spoonie G’s solo success would cause an early exit and thus the featured “fourth†MC, similar to the fifth Beatle as demonstrated on the group’s first pioneering single New Rap Language (Enjoy Records). The Harlem T3 express riding the Enjoy local track was only just pulling out, they’d go on to record and make many popular record stops; next, The Body Rock (Enjoy Records) and At The Party (Enjoy Records) then their landmark, Feel The Heartbeat and follow up Put The Boogie In Your Body (Enjoy Records). The train remained the same but the track was whack so they made provisions to change that; next stop, Action (Sugarhill Records), Yes We Can-Can (Sugarhill Records), Turning You On (Sugarhill Records), Turn It Up (Sugarhill Records), Get Up (Sugarhill Records) and Gotta Rock (Sugarhill Records). Not long after starring in the Harry Belafonte produced movie, Beat Street the force behind partner Kool Moe Dee’s stage and video dance routines was none other than, who?—L.A. Sunshine. His unique brand of sophisticated Hip Hop choreography was put on full display for the widely popular videos, How Ya Like Me Now, Wild Wild West, I Go To Work and No Respect and watched the by millions of viewers of popular shows: Soul Train, Arsenio Hall, Showtime At The Apollo, the Robert Townsend Comedy Special, Rapmania (the Hip Hop Woodstock), Steampipe Alley, Lou Rawls Parade of Stars, and the James Brown Tribute. No one could sell L.A. in ‘78 on him becoming a trendsetter and there being a demand for his talent all over the United States and across the water and would perform in all of the large arenas from the Forum in Los Angeles to the Joe Louis Arena in Detroit to Madison Square Garden in his hometown New York, or, that he’d tour with virtually everyone from the Barkays, Ohio Players, Frankie Beverly and Maze and Cameo to New Edition, Guy, Al B. Sure and Keith Sweat to The Sugarhill Gang, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, RUNDMC and Salt & Pepper to Heavy D, Big Daddy Kane, KRSONE and Tone Loc.It wasn’t long before L.A. Sunshine’s passion for acting landed him roles in the movies Let’s Get Busy with Doug E. Fresh, and the soon-to-be-released The Death of a B-Boy featuring Bow Wow and Rahiem of the Furious Five. He has also taken his acting talents to the theatrical stage where he starred in and co-wrote Judgment Day, a play based on the life of Tupac Shakur that was sponsored and performed at the National Black Theater.Aside from keeping the legacy of Hip Hop alive as a co-partner in the clothing line Sedgwick & Cedar, the passion most near and dear to his heart is the work he does in the community. Varsity basketball players from Rice High School (ranked 10th in the nation) call him coach, women of LaCasita (a women’s treatment center) in need of a cure call him for help and the young children of the Harlem Children Zone call him for a lot, especially Hip Hop history. No matter his level of success, L.A. Sunshine stays grounded and more importantly, to him, approachable. In his own words, “L.A. Sunshine at the drop of the dime not only one of a kind but I’m genuine.â€
