Bio Stevie Ann

“Finding yourself isn’t easy and it’s even harder when you’ve never even tried” sings Stevie Ann on ‘Your Own Heart’, one of the impressive songs on her second album Closer To The Heart. After the overwhelming success of her debut album Away From Here from 2005, winning an Essent Award and the Silver Harp, successful shows on various festivals, venues and theaters, the 21 year old singer went to England to focus on her second album; to find herself again after the hectic previous months.
The result is an intimate, atmospheric album which is a reflection of her personality. “On this album I get to be myself, and the songs are very close to me,” says Stevie Ann. ..r To The Heart you will find pure, acoustic songs but also melodic pop songs and even some rock songs, provided by that sympathetic girl from Limburg with her inseparable guitar and warm voice full of compassion.
Again, Stevie Ann wrote all of the music and lyrics, played the guitar and piano, and was closely involved with the production of the album. The stories that she tells through her music are more personal than the ones on her debut album. “I was younger and my life wasn’t that eventful. I’ve been through many things the past two years, and now I can talk about those experiences through my songs.”
Writing the new material didn’t come easy. “After my study at the Rock Academy I was done with writing, although I had the feeling that I had a lot of things to tell. I just lost the feel for it.” She decided to write a new text every day despite her reluctance. To her surprise this resulted in extraordinary lyrics – philosophical, contemplative and with relativism – which she provided with music.
She left for Wales together with producer Arno Guveau in February 2007, to the studio of producer/musician Lee Goodall, the same place where she recorded some of the acoustic tracks of the limited edition digipack version of Away From Here. She recorded her vocals and guitar without the rest of the band. “It was great to be alone and cut-off from The Netherlands. There was a calm, homely atmosphere which allowed me to completely focus on the music.” Back in The Netherlands she completed the recordings with her new band.
Folk, roots, blues and pop are the characteristics for the new songs. She was inspired by ‘old’ heroes like Joni Mitchell and Bonnie Raitt on the first album, and now she listens to musical companions like John Mayer, Gillian Welsch and Shawn Colvin. The album opens with the inspiring ‘I’ve Listened To Buddha’, a song she wrote when she was staying in London. “I really saw the light there; the music scene in London is so awesome! I was in a period of uncertainty, but being there made me realize that I should go for the music. This is my mission and I will not loose my sight of it.” First single ‘Get Away’ is a real pop song with a rock side to it. A very personal song is ‘Baby Blue’, which starts small and sleepy and slowly transforms into a grandiose track with solemn strings. The song describes how hard it is to live with her new found fame. “People were constantly pulling at me and talking to me, but at the end of the day I was on my own. That felt very lonely.” The acoustic ‘Old Bricks’ also refers to this period, but it has a beautiful, positive twist that is the core of the album. “It’s about a new beginning, a new fresh start. The song is about making your own choices. You have to break down the wall you built, and look straight through it. No more old stones!” Closer is ‘As Cold As You’, which delivers the final goose bumps moment.
You can hear that Stevie Ann has grown in two years time. The dreamy songs with the poetic stories from the debut have matured to adult songs, taken from life itself. Away From Here made Stevie Ann a singer to remember, and on this second album she develops her talent to translate her experiences into strong songs that will touch the heart. Stevie Ann puts a flair and musicality ..r To The Heart that will give her the hard earned spot at the top of the Dutch music scene. A heart warming album!
