I HATE the saying, "You can't have your cake and eat it, too." Why would I have a cake if I didn't want to eat it? I've heard it explained as such: You can't have a pretty cake to be displayed if you are going to eat it. I don't know of any cake, beautiful or not, that is not meant to eat. For instance, wedding cakes are displayed for a while at the beginning of the reception, and everyone can see how pretty it is, but then YOU EAT IT! Better to choose a food item that you would actually want to only display or only eat. Like a gingerbread house. You can't have a pretty gingerbread house out on display during the Christmas season if you are going to eat it. I suppose you could display it for the whole season, and then eat it, but it would be stale, and would be better to eat right after it is constructed. But "You can't have your gingerbread house and eat it, too" sounds stupid. That is all.
