In 1991, me and a girl from South West London called Gabrielle wrote, what turned out to be, one of the biggest selling singles of the 90’s. At the time ‘Dreams’, Gabs’ debut single, seemed to really sum up the mood of a generation: post recession positivity. It smoothly blended that ‘street beat’ sound from the Soul2Soul revolution with a simple but beautiful acoustic accompaniment. Many rightly site Gabrielle as a leader of the subsequent Female Acoustic/ Soul movement.
But being a fledgling professional songwriter and pretty much hitting a home run from my first ball, I felt a little thrown in at the deep end and very conscious of getting the ‘one hit wonder’ tag.
So when, soon after signing my publishing to Polygram Music, Kate Thompson and Colin Barlow suggested I collaborate with Paul Tucker and Tunde Bayou of Lighthouse Family, I grabbed the opportunity with both hands. Similar in many ways to Gabrielle’s style of music, Lighthouse Family was a band that I immediately ‘got’ and a strong working relationship, not to mention friendship, formed that would see me write, produce and mix songs on all of their studio albums.
The years since my first number 1 single have flown by and along the way I’ve written, produced and mixed songs for many, many artists including the likes of Babyface, Stevie Wonder, INXS, Daryl Hall, Gabrielle, Lighthouse Family, Five, Liberty X, Sugababes, Will Young, V, Zoe Birkett, Mark Owen, Billie Piper, S-Club 7, Kenny Thomas, Kavana, Ce Ce Rogers, Holly Valance, Emma Bunton, Atomic Kitten, Blue and S-Club Juniors (to name but a few!!). Other hit singles include Liberty X’s top 10 hit ‘Holding On For You’, Mark Owen’s debut solo single and number 3 hit ‘Child’, and even Billie Piper’s number 3 Christmas hit ‘She Wants You’.
Over the last year, I’ve been getting into music for film & TV and loving every minute. I needed a new challenge and working to picture is certainly that. So far I’ve got a few good clients under my belt already including Fremantle, Talkback Thames, Novel Entertainment, BBC and Publicis.
