A bit about me:
I was born back in 1978 in the city of La Laguna, in Tenerife (Canary Islands). During my first 10 years, I grew up surrounded by Folklore, Salsa, Reggae and Rock music. Although I started into music very early, (I think I had my first music albums when I was about 6 or maybe earlier) I didn't start playing and composing until I was 14, back in 1992. I formed my very first band named Invador, we played Heavy Metal music. I had been a big metal fan since I was 9, by the age of 10 I had even completed my Iron Maiden discography.
Few years later, in 1999, I moved to Gran Canaria and started taking my first guitar and harmony lessons, with José Carlos Díaz, the very first person to inspire me and to help me realize music was a path to follow. I started becoming interested in other genres, I had been listening to some more experimental rock during the last 2 years, all kinds: Led Zeppelin, King Crimson, Gong, Sonic Youth, Smashing Pumpkins, Hendrix, Can,... and also some electronic music, but my ears and guts were asking me to adventure into another styles. Those were crazy days, all was done with passion, and I was so hungry for new experiences and new music, that I just couldn't stop buying albums: Wes Montgomery, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Beastie Boys, Keith Jarret, Pat Metheny, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Return to Forever, Art Blakey, Charlie Parker, Billy Cobham, Tribal Tech, Weather Report,...
During that period I played in several different bands and projects, like En Veneno , we played rock and some psychedelia during that era (they keep rocking, in a more metal oriented way), and some other projects I just can't remember the names but the names from the two highlight projects I took part of. First was playing regularly with my teacher's jazz band, José Carlos DÃaz Group, doing some clubs, and the other one, was a band I formed named "Mecmo and the Elephants", we played psychedelia, with lots of noise and improvisation, but also with some groove.
After that, I decided moving to Madrid, where I studied guitar with my greatest teacher, Sergio Ruzafa, and also studied latin piano with Pepe Rivero and played in some ensambles, from Bossa Nova to Standards. I played in a band named Sinxelo for a period, we played jazz and fusion and meanwhile, I started working on my first home recorded stuff. I was a night owl, so I was always doing mixing and recording during all night long, with my headphones so I wouldn't wake up my flat-mates....that's why I decided to call my first solo project The Caffeine Free Project , because I wasn't needing my coffee to stay awake doing music, and also "Free" refers to the Free character I knew my music was going to be, Free in the meaning of eclectic, I like many different kinds of music so it's hard for me to focus on just one style when it comes to making my music. During the last years I've played in bands and projects that went from Funk, to Jazz, or Rock, and even House (The Moogkees and Kook Company) with DJ Víctor Carballeira .
I have composed and recorded some Original Soundtracks for different films, like the award winning Tiempos Mejores and also for the New York Film Academy in titles like Breaking Point and Lewis (both produced and directed by my beloved sister Isabel Melo).
I've also been taking some studies on sound production and post production during the last years, and have finally settled to create my first solo jazz/fusion project " Jazz Muchacho! ". In the next months I'm planning to finish some recordings, including some Boleros and maybe a Fado. I really hope that you enjoy what I do, for these are all my thoughts,my ideas and feelings.
Best wishes and thanks for your time and presence.
Salud,
Lele Melo.
