The Children of the Nile, an International Non-Governmental Aid Organization, was initially formed to establish infrastructure in yet unreached areas of Uganda. Children, perhaps the most affected by Uganda's long history of atrocities, are the most easily overlooked population. For that reason, TCON has turned its attention to areas of Northern Uganda where Youth Centers and Gymnasiums would grant young people an opportunity for some normalcy. TCON is also formulating plans to begin similar projects in Southern Sudan in the near future. Next to children, widows are perhaps the most forgotten population in Africa. When a husband dies the widow and any of the deceased husband's assets essentially become the property of the husbands family. Often a widow is left without a house to live in or any form of income to provide for her numerous children. She is abandoned by the entire community and is considered to be "A Mother of Problems." To improve the plight of the widows, TCON has joined forces with a local Ugandan organization, Teso Widows Development Initiative (TEWIDI), which was formed to help support widows in the region. Led by a very compassionate and gifted widow who knows a widow's suffering firsthand, this unique organization already has a membership of 10,000 widows plus their children in which TCON is currently providing for in many different ways. TCON built a 7,000 square foot facility to be used as a meeting place for the widows as well as a conference center to be rented out to assist in revenue for this amazing organization. We have distributed thousands of kilos of seed and food to help with the immediate hunger needs of the widows. We have also developed 16 acres of bush into a farm containing 48,000 pineapple suckers and 200 orange trees to equip the widows to self-sustain long-term. Our most recent project has been the construction of a Hospice that will provide the many widows dying of AIDs, Cancer and other illnesses with palliative care. This Hospice will also house a clinic and pharmacy that will be utilized specifically by the widows and their children.
