PRAISE FOR THE GRASSHOPPER LIES HEAVY
"... ...phenomenally composed, superbly delivered, densely structured waves of epic, instrumental post-metal... beautiful, heavy as fuck and mammoth in density and composition. It’s an intense listen, but boy is it fucking good. This band are destined to become as huge as their sound , so get listening now and brag how you were into them before they become massive and Alternative Press and Rock Sound namedrops them on their covers!"
Lee Powell, Judas Kiss Magazine (UK)
"... dense, delicious doom metal...a promising introduction to a band with big potential . With the closing of each measure, Grasshopper leaves the listener worried whether the bottom will inevitably drop out...as anticipation builds the band teases like a buzzed 18 year old.The Grasshopper Lies Heavy work through ideas and riffs slowly and methodically, exploring every texture contained therein, every possible twist and turn that allows spontaneity to manipulate the monotony of repetitive themes. Grasshopper’s songs are going to pick you up, take you on a journey, tell you a story, and take you somewhere. Gun is a great second effort from one of San Antonio and Central Texas’ best."
James Taylor, DecoyMusic.com
" A devastating catharsis... in my first experience.., the euphoria that I felt in hearing the epic, bombastic tones of the riff-based atmospheric sludge offered up was unlike anything else I'd experienced listening to The Grasshopper Lies Heavy's contemporaries... The Grasshopper Lies Heavy brings a concise, no holds barred approach to this genre... a refreshingly energetic and enveloping sound... I felt physically fatigued by the onslaught provided, but in a way that resembles a sweet, sweet version of post-coital euphoria...Hit after hit of unapologetically vast and heavy waves of distortion and well co-ordinated drumming make for an overall thrilling experience. The genius that is presented in the release's opening is also to be commended and is the mark of a band that knows how to use a listener's expectations to its advantage... The Grasshopper Lies Heavy knows their shit. "
Marcus Whale, TSB.com
"TGLH displays a concerted investment in pushing musical boundaries. Particular to TGLH are intricate time signatures and unorthodox song structures , largely the fruits of James Woodard's complex, seamless writing. Clayton Billadeau is exceptional on bass guitar, working with Woodard to revive shoegaze and explore the corners of experimental guitar , ultimately creating an intensely emotive sound."
Francesca Camillo, San Antonio Current "From a sludgy, doom metal elements, to occasional ambient touches, to melodic guitar structures, the pace is slow, yet heavy and dense. With comparisons ranging from the likes of early Swans to Neurosis and even hints of My Bloody Valentine, it's easy to see why they have created such an intriguing and enjoyable debut release."
LP, Judas Kiss Magazine (UK)
"Are you familiar with James Plotkin's OLD? If so, I thought his was some of the most unrecognizable drum programming I'd ever heard; that is, until I heard The Grasshopper Lies Heavy. Flawless attention to detail. Their collision of elements made me smile ..; it's not every day you hear Melvins-esque stop/start dynamics w/ grind core vocals meeting post-rock glide and inscrutable brain-buzz. Kudos! "
Sean Moore, Lid Emba "This is a fantastic debut...It is also interesting to note that this band is just made up of two guys. There is a hell of a lot of diversity and racket here for just two humanoids...This is really a unique collection of songs. these two dudes are doing something unique that deserves to be heard...I can already tell that they are onto something massive with this. "
Jay Snyder, Hellride Music " Eat shit if you don't like this record. I'll fucking kick your teeth in, you lousy sack of shit. "
"If you haven't heard The Grasshopper Lies Heavy then you need to get your shit together. GUN is one of the best instrumental records I've ever heard and even people that are turned off at first by it's slow, sludgy movements soon agree. Plus, I'm right-- I recorded it.""All you fucking hardcore, grindcore kids that tune your strings so low that you keep tripping over them should have a listen to what a good band with tasteful drop tuning sounds like. I consider this record my fucking badge."
