Born out of complete frustration with the direction major labels have taken hip-hop, djpez blazed a local hip-hop trail in NC during the mid to late 90's. Opening Lost City (music and video store) with a college bud, djpez provided a night spot for local poets and MCs to shine. Expanding his operation to UNC's campus and later to Local 506 for a lil "Hip-Hop 101", djpez also held down residencies at three Chapel Hill nightclubs (Treehouse / Gotham/ NV). From NYC to Athens, GA. leaving in his wake; poetry slams, MC battles, the hip-hop band (SANKOFA), memorable opening slots for Busta Rhymes, Talib Kwelli, Outkast, Slick Rick, Dave Chaplle, KRS-ONE, Two Skinny J's, the Sugar Hill Gang, The Roots, Pharcyde, DJ Skribble.................
