Formed in 2001 under the name Scarab, lead vocalist Julia Bogen, Dave McQueen and former members Jeff Edgerly (guitar) Robert Clayton (bass) and lead guitarist Dave Knoth, pooled their collective influences to develop a sound that was truly unique. The band's self-titled 4-song demo quickly became a fan favorite and helped to land the group great gigs. But 2002 was also year for change. The band welcomed Julia's husband Freddy onboard replacing Clayton on bass and also said goodbye to co-founder Edgerly. Now a 4-piece, Julia, Fred, Dave and Dave opted to drop the name Scarab in favor of the more-spiritual and easy to remember, Downward Dog.
In 2003 this talented group of musicians continued to play everywhere they could. An intimate "almost-accoustic" show at Tempe's famed Phase Four Studios brought them to the attention of Michael Beck, a well-known and respected figure in the Phoenix music scene. The foursome met with Beck and in April began work on their debut album. That summer, drummer Dave McQueen continued to develop and promote Girls Nite Out, a showcase of female-fronted rock acts that toured several valley clubs and continues to this day. The band also landed consistent shows at Phoenix's Desert Ridge Marketplace and Tempe's Rio Salado Brewing Co.which helped to secure a stage at the first Rock N Roll Marathon in January 2004 where they played before nearly 14,000 runners along the 13-mile course.
Throughout 2004, the band continued work on the record, laying down tracks as time and finances would allow. In June, the group reported to Becks studio to record two more songs for the record. In late 2004, after nearly 4 and a half years with the project, lead guitarist Dave Knoth announced that he woudl be leaving the band to persue career goals. Long-time acquaintance and accomplished guitarist Ritch Lorello stepped in to replace Knoth in late 2004. The band released their debut album "Time Marches On" to critical and public acclaim in May 2005 and continued to perform throughout the year.
Downward Dog is currently in the preproduction phase of recording on the follow-up LP which will feature 10 brand new tracks and a remake of System of a Down's "Aerials" due out in the spring of 2007.
