Born in the early 80's, as a youngster Type-R always had an ear and interest for music...From James Brown to Run D.M.C to Shabba Ranks his passion for music was born early in his life....
Born in Jamaica Hospital in the heart of the notorious Jamaica Queens (where in that year there were more deaths by gun shots - than there were babies born) Rene Martinez was born to a some what middle class family... Mom was a homemaker and dad was an employed printer at a factory...
Both being imigrants from Ecuador they strived to get a peice of the promiced american dream.... for what came to come , the Martinez family never saw a real future outside of the city limits of Jamaica Queens...There was never really a point in their life where they were starving.. But like all likeliness ,just like every other family in the Jamaica Queens area, there were times where the things got ruff.(especially when your growing up in the hood)
Just like all other juveniles in the area, Type-R got into selling drugs to make ends meet...Growing up in Queens ,gangs were as far away as the corner store...There, was where he got invloved in local graffitti crews & picked up the habits of vandalizing and getting into street beefs with other (graffitti) gangs in the Nyc area..
(By the age of 15 Type-R was a member of almost all the biggest graf crews in New York City,WRB,FTR,OK were 3 of many)
Introduced to rap by a local friend at a early age in his life, Type-R grew a passion for rap by the time he was 11....
From making beats with his mouth (beatboxing) and being the only one who could really keep up a good rythym, he was ordinarily the desinated beat box... As well as "kicking the beat" and being the main center source of the songs that the people attending these groupings were rapping to,he was able to catch on how to "Freestyle"..being that he wasn't actually rapping during the song, his ears and eyes were at work...Learning what it was that the older guys from his neighborhood were doing..
By the time he was 16 he was allready freestyling and winning battles with and against the older generation of his neighborhood and their local rivals...
Naturally Type-R continued to freestyle and kick beats locally and through out the boroughs...
While he never really gained any fame or recognition, Type-Rs confidence just began to grow...With the support of family, friends and spectators,Type-R never forgot nor lost his talent and love for the rap game...
Moving from Queens to Hudson Co. NJ in 1997,Type-R brought with him the ambition and determination to make it ...
But being surrounded by the now heavily populated organizations of The Zulu Nation, Latin Kings & Ñetas, things were about to change ..
Type-R took a huge interest to the light the nations personafied... Becoming deeply invloved with the rapidily growing movement,Type-R somehow lost his drive for his dream and started concidering rap as just a hobby...
He continued his stay in Nj making connections with top drug dealers & local thugs in the area..Although he would still rap from time 2 time with friends every so often ...He kind of thought he had lost his gift... It would take a couple of yrs. for him to realize what was going on...
Little by little everyone started falling around him within his inner circle.. One by one peoples numbers were getting called... They either fell victim to the justice system , the hands of rivals or just the victim of bad circumstance.. Thats when Type-R knew something had to change....
Up until the age of 20. Type-R had never written a real song.. Known to have a great set of verses to throw at a freestyle battle and being concidered a good m.c....He had never really formatted a track...
That All changed when he linked up with fellow underground rapper "Profecy" aka "Big Prof", thats when he quickly learned what making a song was really about ... Profecy an allready established local name, had faith in R and saw that he had it in him to feature on a track with him..So he invited him to guest appear on a song with him that was going to be on a mixtape with city wide distribution..
So just like every other Rapper and freestyler on this planet ,that was just used to freestyling with his friends and at battles with little punchlines and bars ready..He made the transition to song writing..Being with more experienced people didnt phase R nor did it intimidate him...It actually bettered his content..Profecy allready had a handfull of songs under his belt..but with patience and brainstorming the song ended up being one of the hottest tracks on the album...He got alot of good feedback by people and other artists that were on the LP and slowly started to see his dream clearer as a reality.
Formatting songs came natural to "R" ... More than just words, there's alot more to a song ...What people don't understand is that Chemistry,Presentation,Punctuality, and Persona play a huge role in a track...more than less a good record....
And thats What people like "Riff Raff" saw in him... Just like Type-R, Riff Raff was a nomad in Tx.
Originally from Louisiana.. Riff Raff had been touring when he caught an ear to Type-R's sound and prompted to get him down with his label "My Way Records"
In 2003 Type-R came to the decision, that something had to happen and it had to happen quick...Allready at the age of 22, he saw himslef less likely to succeed in the feirce lottery gamble of getting a deal on the allready dominated and HUGELY populated roster of the east coast.....So he decided to leave all his family and friends behind & move his music out of the streets of the Tri-state and hit up the fresh and upcoming wave that was starting in Tx..
Type-R's childhood friend "Profound" who was curently residing in Tx pleaded him to pack up and get started on the plan Type-R was planning for the last 2 yrs...Flood the underground with mixtapes and start a mixtape circuit....Litlle by Little Profound was getting feedback about the Records that he had featuring Type-R...With that and the responce they got from other local artist ,they made it a goal to spread out their music as far as possible with no boundries ....
This is now possible being that he was now in a area less populated by competition nor less in some cases Talent..Type-R made it his plan to link up with the best that Austin had 2 offer and burn a hole into the underground scene... Which is just a baby in his eyes......
It came at the perfect time..In a year where not only was Tx burning its mark in the rap industry, it was also the year where Latinos were finally going mainstream with the long coming wave of Spanish Rap and Reggaeton.....Opening doors to the latin culture and character....With all this and his charisma and star quality persona,we beleive he has a real good shot at getting a deal with a Major....You see Type-R understands the buisness aspect of the game...
With bright ideas and ambitious plots ... We beleive he is most likely to succeed and conquer the now unclaimed throne as the (Quote)"King Of Austins Underground Rap Scene", as well as being one of the most lyrical rappers in Tx.,Type-R is a very talented producer as well... and thats what makes us say he will be one of the leaders of the new era... An era where Latinos voices will be heard in the Hip Hop community...An era where Real Hip Hop conquers bubble gum rap.... An era that will fear the wrath of the evolution...
You see what goes around, comes around..History repeats itself...So its only rite to say ,It will return back to the streets where it started...So ladies and gentlemen... Lets sit back, relax and take notice... & in some cases take notes, and lets just watch & see what happens in 2007.....
