FIGHT THE STIGMA

About Me

The MHANEGA is a grass roots organization that has been in our community since 1955. Projects supported include the provision of direct services to consumers of mental health services, community education on mental health matters, and advocating for mental health issues with local, state and national legislators. Private donations and proceeds from the our Annual Mental Health Benefit provide the major source of funding for continuation of these projects. The Mental Health Benefit, founded in 1990 by Hans-Peter Dietrich, has become an annual tradition and pays tribute to the thriving artistic community in our area while making it possible for the MHANEGA to continue fighting the stigma of mental illness in the 10 county area surrounding Athens. If you have never participated in our Benefit, you are missing out on a great time. Usually scheduled for the first week in February, the Benefit jump starts with our Opening Reception, a chance for the public to view donated art from artists in the Athens area. The week includes at least one music night, a film night, and ends with our live auction! It is a great way to buy incredible art at a reasonable price while supporting a good cause. But the Mental Health Association of Northeast Georgia is about more than just our yearly Benefit. The Association is governed by our Board of Directors who meet once a month on the fourth Monday of the month at 7:00 in the Advantage Behavioral Health board room. All meetings are open to the public. Every year, we host an Annual Banquet in June with a guest speaker and awards for Association members. And every May, we celebrate MENTAL HEALTH MONTH and are "Friends of EarthFare". To find out more details about our events and programs, look on our calendar. For any questions regarding the MHANEGA, please call us at (706) 549-7888 or email us at [email protected]. We welcome your involvement on any level. "If not us, then who? If not now, then when?"
