He asked and I said 'yes of course!'

About Me

Just a suggestion: don't watch a Michael Moore flick the day after you return to the US from a month abroad- Welcome back... we suck! (*Temporary bitterness passes and...*)Yay we're home! What an amazing fantastic wonderful stupendous magical life-changing experience. All kinds of stories and pictures I can't wait to share.Oh, and you should check out my web album at http://picasaweb.google.com/jessiullman because it's easier to put pictures up there rather than here.

My Interests

I begin a good number of my sentences with, "I heard this thing on the radio..." so obviously National Public Radio is up on the list (seeing IRA GLASS twice in one month made my year). Attempting to understand what people do what they do and why (thank you sociology). Big advocate of comprehensive sex education (vs the completely banal and absurd idea of abstinence only sex education posed by the right wing). Other things that captivate my interest include good fiction, MAKING STUFF like jewelry and windchimes, JOGGING, beer and wine, candy making, baking, gardening, puzzles, traveling (big one), dogs, sitting in the sun, sex, Bengal Spice tea, dying my hair, red purses, looking at photographs, HOMOPHONES, getting mail, coffee (preferably french press), walking, pets, games like hot dice, yahtzee, poker, dominos, cribbage, etc., thrift store shopping, witty remarks, time travel, junkyards, peach flavored treats, getting tan (naturally), mimosas, making faces at babies, tennis, mosaics, imagining what old people looked like when they were my age, NOT moving, picking berries and vegetables, spacing out, establishing rapports, showering, going out to breakfast, thinking of stuff that I'm interested in. Other stuff, too.

I'd like to meet:

Music:

Kind of obsessed, especially since I got my Sliver (unlike most of you, I never got an iPod). So, current favs include: Ratatat, Peter Bjorn and John, The New Pornographers, Rilo Kiley, The Raconteurs, Shout Out Louds, Built to Spill, Gorillaz, Feist, Tegan and Sara, Arcade Fire, Bright Eyes, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Ween, Rufus Wainwright, Ryan Adams, T Rex, Regina Spektor, Death Cab for Cutie, TV on the Radio, Dismemberment Plan, Lily Allen, Beirut, Billie Holliday, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Feist, Of Montreal, Neko Case, The Beatles, Simon and Garfunkel, and so much more! I recently discovered that I love ska too, so that was exciting. I'm very open to suggestions. Pandora is about the coolest thing ever.

Movies:

I tend to fall asleep during movies, but I really do like them. Off the top of my head: Life is Beautiful, The Shape of Things, Happiness, Waking Life, Sideways, Adaptation, Syriana, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Empire Records, Rules of Attraction, American Psycho, Blue Velvet, The Breakfast Club, Hard Candy, Little Miss Sunshine, Gone with the Wind, The Departed, Pans Labrynth, The Last King of Scotland, Children of Men,

Television:

Six Feet Under, Twin Peaks, CSI, 24, The Office, Queer as Folk, ER, The L Word, the Shield, the West Wing, the Food Network, Charmed (don't judge me), Scrubs, the X Files. Renting series is one of my favorite things ever

Books:

Anything by Milan Kundera, David Sedaris, Kurt Vonnegut (my current favorite), Tom Robbins, Oscar Wilde, Gabriel Garcia Marquez. Books: Middlesex, The Time Traveler's Wife, The Kite Runner, Geek Love, The Sparrow, Life of Pi, I Know This Much is True, A Girl's Guide to Hunting and Fishing, My Year of Meats, Confederacy of Dunces, Island of the Blue Dolphins, All Over Creation, Harry Potter series

Heroes:

Ira Glass, George Washington Carver, Nelson Mandela, anyone that makes sacrifices for those in need or the greater good

nightmare-ish, in a humorous way

It began by getting on a bus.  I thought an ordinary bus, but this was a school bus for school children.  And I picked a very bad day to make this mistake because the driver was about to "go...

Would be Entry Number Two, but categories no longer exist, hence TIME TRAVEL

Why do I always write when I'm sitting at home drinking wine alone?  Because it's a fabulous time to do such a thing.  As per usual, I have no subject in mind.  Consequently, I delve in...

Entry Number One: My Plan.

Sometimes I want to write but, as a self-defined non-writer, I feel a bit challenged.  I do not write poetry.  That's not going to happen.  However, I like the idea of typing and postin...

Eleanor Roosevelt

Either because we were moving or they had just built a new memorial, my mother and I had to dig and exhume the body of Eleanor Roosevelt and her dog.  The dog had overwhelmingly feline features.&...

It was that his face was surprisingly nondescript that startled her.  Because of this, his features were easily forgotten.  Although she tried, she could recall no more than a tall figure, d...
