Myspace BackgroundsI like walks in the park on a sunny day, drinking wine as the sun goes down, hearing my daughter's infectious laugh, finding a bargain, getting ready for a night out, going on holiday, having a laugh with my husband, my family, mulling things over when swimming, listening to gossip, reading a compelling novel, galloping across spanish hills, being inspired to paint, witty humour, eating good food slowly, thinking about learning to play the piano. I dislike people who spit in the street, never finding a parking space outside my house, finishing a compelling novel, running out of toilet paper, travelling by tube, fake breasts (they're not sexy), going to the dentist, confrontation.Enough about me. I work for a company called Headway East London. Headway East London is a voluntary organisation dedicated to providing a better quality of life for people with acquired brain injury, their families and carers.A brain injury has a huge impact on a person's life, potentially affecting memory, speech, planning skills and behaviour. The strain of these 'hidden' disabilities on family and friends can lead to social isolation. The Headway House is a positive, friendly place where the effects of brain injury are fully understood and people are accepted for who they are.A brain injury can happen to anyone at any time. Young people with their whole lives ahead of them are most at risk, the most common causes being road traffic accidents and assaults. Approximately 30,000 people in London are living with the long term effects of a brain injury with little or no support.Headway East London runs the only brain injury specific centre in London. It acts as a hub where people can meet others in similar situations, where they are accepted and can be themselves. People come to regain lost skills, learn new ones, and increase their confidence. It is a place where people are cognitively and socially stimulated. Activities include art, music, IT, discussion groups, memory exercises and outings. Skilled services include Music Therapy, Counselling, Yoga and Gym. To find out more visit www.headwayeastlondon.org.
