About Me

C'est Moi!Thanks for checking out my profile. I am currently employed as an CAD draftsman at a local branch office of the world's largest engineering firm. It's a great job, challenging and rewarding with lots of great perks. I work with a great team of very capable individuals. I am still wrapping up my CAD degree and am working here to meet my internship requirements, but hope to continue on with the company when school ends in a few months. At that point I may opt to continue school and become an engineer, but I have yet to make the final decision on that since I have a lot of other interests that currently occupy most of my free time.I am also a self-employed musician, (Check out BenWatkinsGuitarStudio.com!), guitarist/vocalist/songwriter with the Midwest band "Big'ns" (Update- Bign's are officially retired since our bassist/vocalist moved to Texas. Brian is a great talent and we probably can't replace him, but we love him and wish him all the best. You GO boy!). I also teach guitar, bass, and music theory, plus I am the new guitar instructor at the local college. (Note! I LOVE hearing from former students, learning how their lives are going, where they are, what is new with them! PLEASE drop a line and update me on your accomplishments, travels, etc. ALWAYS great to hear from you!). I attend school full time (CAD engineering), do benefits for Compassion International (Visit their site! I found a WONDERFUL little girl to help in this world!), Big Brother/Big Sister, and Planned Parenthood, among others.I am very lucky to have a life that includes a great family, wonderful friends, a full roster of kind and supportive students, quality colleagues at work, health, happiness, etc. Half the secret to happiness is realizing where you are fortunate!I love spending spare time with my Nephew, Tyler. I have no kids of my own, so he is a Godsend in my life, a bright, fun, level-headed kid that is a blast to hang out with. I am dreading the day he is too grown up to find time for bumming around with Uncle Ben...I take a lot of pictures these days. Some of them are below, but I have many more finished images. I'm currently working on getting my photography published. All of these images have hidden watermarks to help me identify them if they are used without permission...UPDATE! I'm getting published pretty regularly these days. Photo Laureate Anthology 2007 will feature my image "Narnia's Doorway" and Limited Magazine is also considering running a feature layout of my work. Also check out the Reader Focus gallery at Herald-Review.com/ReaderFocus or my Flickr page at Flickr.com/FranzJosefHidin. Photography is a great way to really live in the moment, seeking out that which is worth remembering and capturing every day. My Interests

I am interested in music, education, fitness, politics, inventing, travel, philosophy, photography, all branches of science, astronomy, cooking, writing, literature, and of course, ***.

I'd like to meet:

People who AREN'T trying to get my credit card number, get me to view their nude pics, sell me stuff, etc. I AM interested in enlightened conversation, sincerity, decency, kindness, witty banter, genuine humor, etc. Don't ask me to cyber; I prefer the real thing. I'm not really any kind of boy scout, I just don't want to attract people for the wrong reasons...Life's too short. When school is over in May of 2008, I'd like to meet a fantastic woman that knows what she wants and isn't afraid to make it happen. I have been blessed with the company of many wonderful women over the years, but have never been married. I am beginning to long for that one solid relationship in my life, a place to focus my deep and abiding love of life and a person to share life with, the good and the bad. Hopefully that's not too much to ask...

Music:

I listen to a lot of late classical/romantic period music. Chopin, Rachmaninoff, DeBussy are my true favorites, music of obvious eloquence and passion. I tend to enjoy guitar virtuosity, artists like Pat Metheny, Al DiMeola, Gary Moore, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Joe Pass, Stanley Jordan, Stevie Ray Vaughan, etc. My students keep me up to date on the newer stuff. Of the newer bands around, I am partial to Finch, Emery, Trivium, Yellowcard, anything that shows genuine songwriting ability and earnest musicianship. Fashion does not impress me... Movies:

Gotta love a great film. I could watch "Crimes and Misdemeanors" anytime. I also loved "American Beauty". It showed how those trying the hardest to appear virtuous are often hiding something while those who are honest about their flaws can still do the right thing when the chips are down. "What Dreams May Come" was also fantastic, a love story for eternity. My list of fave films is short because at any given moment, I'd rather be DOING something than watching something... UPDATE! Schindler's List, Sling Blade, Contact, 2001, Big Fish, Crash, Chocolat, Annie Hall, Spinal Tap, Cider House Rules, The Gods Must Be Crazy, The Breakfast Club, Apollo 13, Do The Right Thing, Dr. Strangelove, Being There, Clerks, Wonderboys. Anything that keeps me thinking about it for days afterward.CATS CATS CATS

Television:

If it's not informative, I'm probably not watching it. My TV stays off for months at a time.

Books:

Many books have made a great difference in my life. I would have to list "Cosmos", "Pale Blue dot", and "The Dragons of Eden" by Carl Sagan, "Coming of Age in the Milky Way" by Timothy Ferris, "The Prophet" by Kahlil Gibran, "Everything I Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten" by Robert Fulghum, "The Power of Myth" by Joseph Campbell, "Care of the Soul" by Thomas Moore, "Jonathan Livingston Seagull" by Richard Bach, "Origin of Species" by Charles Darwin and Alfred Wallace, countless works of visionary fiction by Asimov, Bradbury, Clarke, Niven, Steinbeck, Lewis, Sinclair, Orwell, . I attended many small midwestern schools with poor literature programs, so I have spent some of the subsequent years catching up on quality reading. My soulmate is a person that can be happy quietly reading on a Sunday afternoon, perhaps in bed, or maybe under a tree in a quiet park. Quality time to be sure...I'm currently reading "The Story of Philosophy" by Bryan McGee. I should have learned this stuff 20 years ago, but it's never too late!

Heroes:

My heroes are people that made great advances in human understanding against great odds. Newton comes to mind, as does Aristotle, Kepler, Huygens, Copernicus, Einstein, Rutherford, Leonardo, Madam Curie, Hypatia. Anyone who pushed back the veil of ignorance for the benefit of future generations. My Family also has its share of heroes, including Grandma who raised three wonderful girls largely on her own, Mom, who is such a strong, bright, admirable woman, Dad, the first genius I ever met and a man who imparted on me a genuine love of knowledge and learning, and my Brother who has become an amazing musician and composer, but before that he was always a kind and giving soul. Now he's my best friend. It's good to have heroes.
