"Seeing as how they’re shameless Brit-rock geeks, Tape Deck Sonata aren’t about to discover the old weird America anytime soon. They’re having too much fun with the old weird punks, the older, weirder mods, and hoary ’80s St. Louis radio rock — which means they sound as much like the Cars as they do the Buzzcocks or the Stone Roses. Formed in 2003 by guitarist Kevin Clipper and vocalist/ songwriter Nick Baker, the band has been leisurely about its releases: The five-song EP, Side A, appeared in 2005 — and that’s it. Their twitchy, fuzzy and just shy-of-stoned guitar pop may still be in gestation, but they have the hooks and patience to grow into their influences"

"This has been said "once or twice" but a good tight indie-pop band is irresistible, and Tape Deck Sonata fits the description perfectly. Don Dreste is a very tasteful drummer (hard to find ’em in these parts) and a first-rate character, always great to do shows with. They finished with "Under the Broken Lights," an indelible, simple, and catchy tune that always rocks the barn."

"This band that has been described as having the melody structures and lyric content of brit pop with hard rock influences. Together for almost three years, Tape Deck Sonata has already made a name for its self in the St. Louis area by writing good rock songs that do not seem to sway to any flavor of the month sound. Consisting of members Kevin Clipper (guitar), Tom Havel (bass), Nick Baker (guitar/vocals), and Don Dreste (drums/vocals), the band’s sound can be some what compared to the sounds of Stone Roses, Psychedelic Furs, the Who, the Smiths and many others."

Insidestl.com Interview
Bio Tape Deck Sonata is a British style hard rock band from St. Louis, MO. The band blends captivating and melodic chords progressions with unique string arrangements that compliment the sound in rip-roaring way. The bands roots of influences go all the way back to Hanks Williams Sr, The Beatles, Credence Clearwater Revival, The Velvet Underground, The Doors, Three Dog Night all the way to Nirvana, Oasis, Suede, Stone Roses, Pulp, Muse, Kasabian, Brian Jonestown Massacre and The Warlocks. The band shares the working class ideals of such performers as Jarvis Cocker, Brett Anderson, Bob Dylan and John Lennon which can be noticed in the their song writing process and live shows.
Started in 2003 by Nick Baker and Kevin Clipper and later solidified by Don Dreste Jr and Tom Havel the band has been gigging the St. Louis for the past three years. The band put out a five song EP entitled Side A in 2005. The disc was the bands first attempt to blend American and British Rock influences.
The band has now put out their second EP titled side B which is a sampler to their full length that is due out later this winter. The Disc contains three songs. On the first track, drummer Don Dreste sings on the psychedelic British influenced Dissolve. The song was written after Don had a intense dream about getting shot in the heart after a dispute. The dream was so intense that after he woke up he still thought that he was shot and needed immediate attention (He scared his roommate by trying to doing so). The second song is titled Open Fields and is also another song that Don Dreste sings. Its an alcohol induced freak-out song about the intensity of taking excess to the point of isolation. The last song on the disc is Pack of the Pack and is the only song on the EP in which Nick Baker sings. It’s a song that’s meaning that will remain anonymous for purposes of having the listener paint their own image.
Side B is Tape Deck Sonata’s attempt to further evolve its blend of Hard Rock with British influences. Their live shows are very energetic and the songs meanings are just intense. We thank you for taking the time to listen to Side B. Please be on the lookout for our full length due out late winter.-Tape Deck Sonata
